A vote recount Thursday evening did not change the numbers from the May 4 Alpine City Council Election.
Lori A. Griffin asked for the recount when she came out second best to Lucy Escovedo 33 to 32 in Ward 4.
After the recount, the total still was 33 to 32.
The next action will be the canvass of the vote by the City Council in a brief meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
In a spirited meeting Thursday evening at Legion Hall, a consortium of non-profits discussed their new charge, planning and carrying out future July 4 activities.
For one thing, the civic part of the observance of the nation’s birthday will return this year for the most part to the Brewster County Courthouse lawn.
It will start that morning, Thursday, July 4, not Saturday, with the annual parade along Holland Avenue and ending at the Courthouse.
David Pallanez is overseeing that part of the event and the summer Theatre Program at Sul Ross State University will be the Grand Marshal.
The American Legion will provide noon and evening meals and the annual fireworks show, which will remain at Kokernot Park.
County Judge Greg Henington told the group earlier that the aerial fireworks will be visible from the Courthouse.
Observers have noted that many non-profits stepped in when The Kiwanis Club and Rhonda Cole asked to be relieved after running the event for many years.
We noted that it was hard to find a way to speak because when a subject came up, someone almost immediately grabbed the floor and offered to provide it.
Two co-chairs have emerged and have run most of the meetings so far this year.
They are Alpine Community Projects founder and President Kirsten Moody and Alpine Historic Association founder Abbey Branch.
Moody, who chaired Thursday’s meeting, said they are looking for food and game vendors and activities such as a photo booth, petting zoo, face painting, an evening street danced and more.

The Big Bend Regional Medical Center has a half-page ad in this week’s Alpine Avalanche congratulating six graduating nursing students at Sul Ross State University.
The 2024 graduates are Nick Martinez, Brielle Gonzales, Ann Constabile, Kayla Grado, Sol Valenzuela and Bella Morales.
They all will join the hospital nursing staff.
It’s the law. The City of Alpine requires dogs and cats living in the city to have a city license from Alpine Animal Services.
For one thing, it is a form of identification in case your pet goes missing. And it is especially necessary if your pet has not been microchipped, which also is required.
Rabies shots are required as well and the license will have that information.
The city Animal Shelter can issue licenses and can do microchipping for 15 dollars. The license is ten dollars or 20 if the animal has not been spayed or neutered.

Alpine Elementary School will present a Music program and Art show starting at 5:15 Tuesday, May 21.
The Facebook notices said guests should just step through the cafeteria doors and be directed to the gym for the program.
The notice promises you will be captivated by the artwork created by pre-K through fourth graders.
The music program will be brief but the notice promises it will be delightful.
Check the flyer on the Facebook post for details and guests are asked to come for their specific time and then leave so others can enjoy the presentation.
