A memorial service for Brenda Ellen Rhinehart of Alpine will be at 2 Saturday, March 16, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 1508 North 4 th.
She died February 17. She was born on November 4, 1950, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1969 and later earned an associate degree as an administrative assistant.
Brenda started by working in a hospital emergency room, then moved into working at a pharmacy until she retired in 2019. She is survived by a daughter, a son and six grandchildren.
With recent incidents involving fentanyl in the community, area law enforcement agencies have created a comprehensive collaborative investigation.
Participants are the Brewster County Sheriff’s office, Alpine Police Department, Texas D.P.S., Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Willie Ben Lara the Third, Michael Espinosa and Emily Medley were taken into custody recently in Hudspeth County.
They were in possession of some 85 hundred potentially lethal doses of fentanyl, along with methamphetamine, all destined for Alpine. The suspects are subject to numerous federal charges.
The Alpine High School One-Act Play troupe had a strong showing the District meet Friday in Stanton.
Its production of “Farewell To Galatea” will advance to the next round of competition and several student actors won individual district accolades.
Jake Esparza won Best Actor, Zoe Arredondo won an All-Star Cast award, Hatfield Cason and Alyssa Barron won Honorable Mention and Lauralai Bates was Best Stage Manager.
The cast of Taryn Clockman, Lauralai Bates, Alyssa Mitchel, Isabel Ortiz, Raul Renteria, Andrea Johnson and Hannah Vidal won Best Crew.
Two Sul Ross Theatre Program students were invited to perform a scene from last fall’s main stage production of “Oleanna” by David Mamet in Abilene.
Olivia Pertuso of Alpine and Justin Hinton of Dallas will perform at the Region 6 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
The production was performed in October for regional festival consideration by the festival theater faculty from West Texas A and M and Texas Tech University.
Pertuso and Hinton traveled to Abilene in late February to perform a selected scene at the four- day festival.
Pertuso, a graduate student, was nominated for an Irene Ryan Acting Award.
She participated in the competition with monologues from “A Doll’s House: Part II” by Lucas Hnath and “Antigone” by Sophocles.
Hinton, a senior theater major, also advanced to the final round of the competition, performing a song from “The Scarlet Pimpernel.”
The Sul Ross biology, chemistry and mathematics programs participated in the Texas Academy of Science meeting at the University of Texas Permian Basin last weekend.
Four faculty and two undergraduate students in attendance made five presentations at the event.
Dr. Chris Ritzi and Ben Thomas presented “Grey Oak mortality and an updated flora of Sul Ross’s Hancock Hill.”
Dr. Angela Brown and Dr. Jennifer Miller-Ray together presented “Outreach in Southwest Texas for increasing STEM education interest.”
Christopher Wright and Dr. Hong Young Chang presented a study on thermal and structural analysis.
Sarah Jane Gilbert and Dr. Thornton Larson presented a paper on diversity of two wetland habitats on Sul Ross property.
