Good evening, today is Wednesday, March 8th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Alpine demographics show a Hispanic population of 49% and a 44% white population. Alpine’s black population accounts for only 2.4%.
That demographic will be highlighted this fall in the first “Afro Food, Fashion, Dance and Arts Festival,” or Afro Fab Fest, scheduled for this fall.
Annie Hiamey, a native of Ghana who now lives in Alpine, told the City Council about the event planned for September 28 through October 1 in Alpine.
She presented a power point telling all about the festival and the dignitaries from several countries in Africa and the Caribbean who will be invited.
In her presentation, she asked for a letter of support from Mayor Catherine Eaves for an event she called “Celebrating Diversity, the Way Forward.”
Hiamey’s letter says the festival will “illustrate the potential of our country as a beacon of diverse cultures and investments.”
It will “bring together high net-worth individuals in the tourism and hospitality industries” in the United States, Africa and the rest of the world.
The council unanimously approved the event and authorized the mayor to sign a suggested letter of support.
March for Meals is a month-long, nationwide observance of Meals on Wheels which seniors in Alpine and Marathon rely on to remain healthy and independent at home.
The next event will be a Saint Patrick’s Day ice cream social Monday which Sunshine House Executive Director Kerie van Zeyst said will also serve as an open house.
Van Zeyst: “Have an ice cream with our seniors, have fun, listen to some Irish music, wear green, all that fun stuff. Even though it’s a few days early for St. Patrick’s Day, we’re going to get all the green out.”
On March 25, a Fun Run at the Sul Ross Campus through loop road will raise awareness with gift bags for the first 50 that sign up and free t-shirts for all participants.
Finally, volunteers will be celebrated at a volunteer fiesta with musicians, food and a presentation for the volunteer of the year award on the 28th.
(Van Zeyst:“We do love our volunteers, how much they mean to us. We really do have the best volunteers in the whole world. They’re fantastic.”
The annual March for Meals commemorates March of 1972, when President Nixon signed an amendment to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older.

Caitlynn Almance, a Sul Ross State University senior from Odessa, has been elected president of the Texas State Teachers Association-Aspiring Educators.
This is a professional association for college and university students preparing to teach.
Almance, a theatre major with a double concentration in acting, directing and film studies, was elected from a slate that included students from far larger schools.
The T.S.T.A. is the Texas affiliate of the National Education Association, headquartered in Washington, D.C., with more than three million members.

International animal welfare organization Animal Balance will perform its thousandth spay and neuter surgery in Fort Stockton for cats and dogs in the Big Bend region next week.
The partnership began offering monthly, two- or three-day clinics in Presidio, Marfa, Alpine, Terlingua, Marathon, Pecos and Fort Stockton.
