The Big Sentinel reports that former D.A. and Alpine City Attorney Rod Ponton, now Presidio county attorney, lost to relative newcomer Blair Park with 70 percent of the vote Tuesday.
Park is a native of Marfa and had been away but she returned to this area a few years ago.
The paper led the story with a report on ads Ponton began running in Ojinaga recently attacking an ad Blair placed saying “no más Marfa.”
The ads stated her desire to help the citizens of Presidio County. She told the paper her goal is reuniting the county and not one area over another.
With no Republicans in the race, Blair will take the seat beginning in January.
In continuing confrontations with illegal border crossers, Brewster County deputies in the Study Butte area assisted U.S. Border Patrol agents with an arrest this week.
A group of four illegal migrants including a juvenile fled from a traffic stop and the agents called for backup.
The four suspects, all citizens of Mexico, were arrested and referred to the Border Patrol for processing.
The Sentinel also reports this week that Sierra Blanca officials have arrested the brother of a suspected fentanyl overdose victim who died in Alpine last month.
But Alpine Police Chief Darrell Losoya told the paper that charges against Willie “Sapo” Lara the Third are not related to the death of his brother Ismael I.J. Vega.
The 23-year-old Vega died while doing drugs at home with his mother on February 15. She survived a trip to the hospital.
The new suspect left Alpine after Vega’s death because he was known as a major supplier of drugs.
The case was related to the death earlier last month of Daniel Celaya of Alpine who died of an overdose at Uncle’s Convenience Store at 2411 East Highway 90 in Alpine.
County officials have warned about the dangers of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs and hosted a training including the use of the anti-overdose drug Narcan.
The Alpine Public Library will host another Estate Planning information session presented by lawyer Robert Steele this month.

Sales Tax receipts delivered by the state to jurisdictions that collect the tax were mixed again in March.
The biggest percentage change was in sparsely-populated Jeff Davis County with a 75 percent increase from 79949 dollars to 13.900.
The smaller the number measured, the larger the changes possible.
Brewster County Emergency Services District, which partially funds Terlingua Fire and E.M.S.
also was up a healthy 27 percent to 55750 dollars.
The only other increase was in Presidio County, which posted a still healthy increase of 14 percent and change to 42200.
Alpine was down eight-and-a-quarter percent to 147000, Marfa was off 4.8 percent to 51200 and Brewster County was down 2.8 percent to 76000.
These allocations are based on sales made in January by businesses that report the tax monthly.
Comptroller Glenn Hegar said he will send 981 million dollars to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts, 2.2 percent less than in March, 2023.

The Big Sentinel informa que el ex fiscal del distrito y el fiscal de la ciudad de Alpine, Rod Ponton, ahora fiscal del condado de Presidio, perdió el martes ante la relativamente recién llegada Blair Park con el 70 por ciento de los votos.
