Good evening, today is Tuesday, March 7th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Alpine Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart met with Texas legislators recently to discuss budget changes among other legislative priorities.
She was primarily interested in changes in the state funding formula meant to increase funding for school districts but some, including Alpine, ended up receiving less.
Alpine’s funding is per-pupil but the district got about 1,500 less per student than comparable schools, totaling 1.5 million dollars lost for the thousand students served here.
Rinehart said other schools have benefited from the change and she does not want to take that away from them.
Rinehart: “So this is one of the things we’re working with our legislators on to say ‘It was never ya’ll’s intention to cut funding to these 100 schools when you redid the state funding formula. Let’s close this loophole, let’s get it fixed.’”
This new formula, alongside other issues add up to the 1.5-million-dollar gap in funding for Alpine.
Rinehart said working with legislators to fix overarching problems is the key to dealing with these issues that also impact Fort Davis.
Rinehart: “We’re all kind of brainstorming, and kind of workshopping what would a solution look like to this that negatively impacts these two school districts in our political district.”
She said the ideal solution would benefit Alpine without taking away from other school districts that have benefited.
Rinehart: “The perspective I’m taking on this is, hey, if we can fix numerous smaller leaks, if we can fix this 200,000 or 300,000 here, and this one and this one, maybe in two or three different spaces, that’s a million dollars and that’s a huge turn of events here in Alpine.”
Rinehart also discussed looking at improving funding for security expenses, moving to enrollment-based funding and property tax relief.
Starry Skies of Balmorhea will be observed at the Balmorhea State Park Saturday in an evening under the stars in the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool.
Backers say this will be a blackout event and guests should limit the use of flashlights and cellphones, which will not be permitted in the viewing area.
Artificial light diminishes night vision.
Guests will meet at the check-in at main office. They should bring towels, chairs and binoculars and dress for the weather.

Big Bend National Park’s Communications Center received a call requesting emergency assistance for a hiker along the Hot Springs Canyon Trail Monday.
A team of Park Rangers and a U.S. Border Patrol Agent responded and immediately began C.P.R. but all attempts to revive the hiker were unsuccessful.

El Centro de Comunicaciones del Parque Nacional Big Bend recibió una llamada solicitando asistencia de emergencia para un excursionista a lo largo de Hot Springs Canyon Trail el lunes.
