Zulema Lujan, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away on March 3. She was 76.
Born in La Boquilla de San Isidro, Zulema lived a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her family.
A remarkable cook, she was known for her delightful asados that brought families together. Her kitchen was a sanctuary, where delicious meals were crafted with love, accompanied by her infectious laughter and spirited jokes.
Zulema cherished her moments on the front porch, where she would sit and reflect, enjoying the simple beauty of life. She found immense joy in connecting with her children and grandchildren through FaceTime, their laughter bridging the distance and filling her heart with happiness.
Her personality shone brightly–she was kind-hearted, supportive, and gifted with a great sense of humor. Her incredible strength and nurturing spirit made her an amazing grandmother and mother, and her family was truly a reflection of how beautifully she raised them.
Zulema is survived by two siblings; three daughters; as well as nine grandchildren,
The visitation for Zulema will be held on Sunday, March 8, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Services, beginning with the recitation of the rosary, begin at 6:00 p.m. at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home,
A funeral mass in her honor will be Monday, March 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with interment to follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.
Zulema Lujan will be profoundly missed but her legacy of love, compassion, and humor will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her.

Congressman Tony Gonzales has decided to not seek re-election and is dropping out of his primary runoff race.
The three-term Republican has admitted to have an affair with a former aide who later died by suicide. On Thursday night, Gonzales said he will finish the rest of his term and that he will continue “fighting for my constituents for whom I am eternally grateful.”
Gonzales dropping out means his challenger Brandon Herrera will be the Republican nominee for the sprawling Congressional District 23, which covers over 800 miles of the Texas-Mexico border, including the Big Bend. He’ll face the Democratic nominee Kayla Padilla Stout in the general election in November.

Next week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host a handful of training opportunities for business owners.
The first webinar will go over techniques for businesses looking to improve their financial efficiency. In this training, you’ll learn how to manage your finances in order to optimize your cash flow. That training is Tuesday, March 10 from 1:00 to 2 p.m.
The next workshop will help you figure out how to manage your finances, teach you common practices and introduce you to tools to start and grow your business. That training is Wednesday, March 11 from 10 to 11 a.m.
The final training next week will go over how to determine your marketing direction without second-guessing yourself. You’ll also learn how to use AI as a strategic assistant to clarify decisions and not create more noise.

Ten former Sul Ross Lobos will be honored at the university’s 38th annual alumni gala later this month.
On Saturday, March 21 distinguished alumni, rodeo exes, athletes and friends will be inducted into the Hall of Honor. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the ceremony.
Tickets are $75 for adults and $25 for children under the age of 12.
The event will be at the Gallego Center in Alpine.

Next month (April), the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects will host its third community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population.
The meeting is Wednesday, April 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse.

Nacida en La Boquilla de San Isidro, Zulema vivió una vida llena de amor, risas y una dedicación inquebrantable a su familia.
Una cocinera excepcional, conocida por sus deliciosos asados que unían a las familias. Su cocina era un santuario, donde se preparaban deliciosas comidas con amor, acompañadas de su risa contagiosa y chistes animados.
Su personalidad brillaba con luz propia: era bondadosa, comprensiva y tenía un gran sentido del humor. A Zulema le sobreviven dos hermanos, tres hijas y nueve nietos.
El velorio en su memoria se llevará a cabo el domingo 8 de marzo a partir de la 1:00 p. m. Los servicios, que comenzarán con el rezo del rosario, comenzarán a las 6:00 p. m. en la Funeraria Alpine Memorial.
La misa funeral en su honor se celebrará el lunes 9 de marzo a las 10:00 a. m. en la Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora de la Paz, seguida del entierro en el Cementerio Santos Ángeles.

El congresista Tony Gonzales ha decidido no buscar la reelección y se retira de la segunda vuelta de las primarias.
El republicano, que lleva tres mandatos, ha admitido haber tenido una aventura con una exasesora que posteriormente se suicidó. El jueves por la noche, Gonzales declaró que terminará el resto de su mandato y que seguirá “luchando por mis electores, a quienes les estoy eternamente agradecido”.
La retirada de Gonzales significa que su rival, Brandon Herrera, será el candidato republicano para el extenso Distrito Congresional 23, que abarca más de 1287 kilómetros de la frontera entre Texas y México, incluyendo el Big Bend. Diez exalumnos de Sul Ross Lobos serán homenajeados en la trigesimooctavo 38.ª gala anual de exalumnos de la universidad, que se celebrará a finales de este mes.
El sábado 21 de marzo, distinguidos exalumnos, exjugadores de rodeo, atletas y amigos serán incorporados al Salón de Honor. La velada comenzará con un cóctel a las 5:30, seguido de la cena y la ceremonia.
