Thomas William Murray has passed away. He was 79.
Thomas was born in Austin and raised in the ranch lands of Georgetown, where he learned the value of hard work, integrity, and caring for others at an early age.
On May 24, 1969, Tom married the love of his life, Linda Robertson, in Plains, Texas. For 57 beautiful years, they built a life rooted in adventure, resilience, and unwavering devotion. Together they raised three children and created a legacy of love that continues through generations.
Tom would go on to earn a double degree in chemistry from Sul Ross University in 1970.
He was a loving husband “Bubba”, Daddy, and “Poppy”—a sweet, kind soul who showed his family how a gentle man can profoundly impact generations. Whether working cattle, fixing up a project, lending a helping hand, or simply listening with patience and care, Tom lived with quiet strength and steady compassion.
From creating meaningful memories with his family to traveling across the United States in an RV and enjoying cruises with Linda, he truly lived life to the fullest—steadfast, joyful, and always ready for the next adventure.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Linda; two children; his cherished five grandchildren; and his precious great-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine, Texas.
In remembrance of Tom, the family asks you to be an inspiration to your generational family. Love others the way he did—gently, faithfully, and without hesitation.

The Republican race for Congressional District 23 is heading to a runoff after neither incumbent Congressman Tony Gonzales or his top challenger Brandon Herrera failed to get more than 50 percent of the vote.

The contest was narrow. And as of Wednesday morning, results showed Herrera–a gun rights activist and Youtuber–with about 43 percent of the vote compared to Gonzales’ nearly 42 percent. Gonzales entered the tight primary mired in political controversy. The three-term congressman is reported to have had an affair with a staffer who later died by suicide.
In the democratic primary, voters picked Katy Padilla Stout as their candidate to represent the 23rd Congressional District, which stretches from El Paso out to San Antonio and covers more than 800 miles of the Texas-Mexico border.
Padilla Stout will find out who she’s running against – after Herrera and Gonzales have their primary runoff. Election day for THAT race is Tuesday, May 26.

In other election news, voters in neighboring Presidio County had their say on who should be the county judge. Incumbent Jose “Joe” Portillo held on to his seat after beating challenger and former county commissioner David Beebe by fewer than 100 votes.
With no candidate running in the Republican Primary, Portillo is all but guaranteed Presidio County’s top elected position.
In Jeff Davis County, incumbent Curtis Evans lost the Republican primary against challenger Buster Mills. No Democrats ran for the position. In Brewster County in the only competitive race in the Democratic Primary, Holly Blankenship edged out Mary Bell Lockhart to be the party’s county chair. In other local races, candidates like incumbent County Judge Greg Hennington and county commissioners William “Mo” Morrow and Sara Allen Colando had no challengers in either party’s primaries.

Last night, the city of Alpine approved a resolution expressing concern over the proposed border wall in the Big Bend.
As part of the council’s discussion, they adopted new language that states the council “supports exploration of border security measures using technology.”
Council member Eva Martinez:
MARTINEZ1: “I like the clarification that we support a virtual wall but not a physical wall…We don’t need a physical wall.” (0:07)
Council unanimously approved of the resolution. Counties throughout the Big Bend region will also consider similar resolutions in the coming weeks.

Sul Ross State University has approved a new bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences.
According to the school, the program will help prepare students for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and other related fields. The degree will be offered at both the Alpine campus and Sul Ross State University International.
University leaders say the degree reflects the growing demand regionally for healthcare professionals and advanced STEM training across the borderlands. In a press release, Dr. Dean Culpepper–the head of the College of Health Sciences– said the program represents QUOTE “a major investment in the future healthcare workforce of rural West Texas and the border region.”

La contienda republicana por el Distrito Congresional 23 se dirige a una segunda vuelta después de que ni el congresista titular Tony Gonzales ni su principal rival, Brandon Herrera, lograran más del 50% de los votos.

Y hasta la mañana del miércoles, los resultados mostraban a Herrera —activista por el derecho a portar armas y youtuber— con cerca del 43% de los votos, en comparación con casi el 42% de Gonzales. Gonzales llegó a las reñidas primarias sumido en una polémica política. Se informa que el congresista, quien ya llevaba tres mandatos, tuvo una aventura con una empleada que posteriormente se suicidó.
En las primarias demócratas, los votantes eligieron a Katy Padilla Stout como candidata para representar al Distrito Congresional 23, que se extiende desde El Paso hasta San Antonio y abarca más de 1287 kilómetros de la frontera entre Texas y México.
Padilla Stout descubrirá contra quién se postula después de que Herrera y Gonzales celebren la segunda vuelta de las primarias. El día de las elecciones para esa contienda es el martes 26 de mayo.

Anoche, la ciudad de Alpine aprobó una resolución que expresa su preocupación por el muro fronterizo propuesto en Big Bend.
Como parte de la discusión del consejo, se adoptó un nuevo texto que establece que el consejo “apoya la exploración de medidas de seguridad fronteriza mediante el uso de la tecnología”.
Concejal Eva Martínez cito: “Me gusta la aclaración de que apoyamos un muro virtual, pero no uno físico… No necesitamos un muro físico”.
El consejo aprobó la resolución por unanimidad. Los condados de la región de Big Bend también considerarán resoluciones similares en las próximas semanas.

La Universidad Estatal Sul Ross ha aprobado una nueva licenciatura en ciencias biomédicas.
Según la institución, el programa ayudará a preparar a los estudiantes para carreras en medicina, odontología, farmacia, veterinaria y otras áreas afines. El título se ofrecerá tanto en el campus de Alpine como en la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross Internacional.
Los directivos universitarios afirman que el título refleja la creciente demanda regional de profesionales de la salud y formación avanzada en STEM en la zona fronteriza. En un comunicado de prensa, el Dr. Dean Culpepper, director de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, afirmó que el programa representa “una importante inversión en el futuro de la fuerza laboral sanitaria de las zonas rurales del oeste de Texas y la región fronteriza”.
