Today’s winds are expected to continue tomorrow.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland, heavy winds will be widespread across the region, and in the Alpine area, they say gusts could reach up to 80 miles per hour. Those winds will be joined by a cold front, which will also make for a cooler and drier day in Far West Texas.
Chris Stickney is a meteorologist with the weather service in Midland. He says those winds – along with other conditions – have led the agency to issue a “Red Flag Warning” for much of West Texas.
What that really means is that we’re going to be pretty vigilant, and for any wildfires that may start, the vegetation in the area, what vegetation there is, is going to be very, very dry and very, very susceptible to any sort of sparks or heat that could cause it to start to smoke and add in the winds and you could have a wildfire on your hands, he mentioned.
Stickney says with the potential for fire danger, people should not do any sort of outdoor burning over the next couple of days.
And while the region’s expected to get a brief reprieve from the winds on Wednesday, Stickney says the end of the week will see some windy conditions return.
The City of El Paso has broken ground on the first U.S. facility that will treat wastewater for direct re-use in a city water supply.
According to Inside Climate News, the project has long been in the works and will come online in 2028. Once operational, the facility will bring in treated wastewater and put it through a multi-step purification process. That process includes a “reverse osmosis” step, which separates water molecules from other substances. Then, hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet light are used to kill any bacteria in the water. Other steps further disinfect the water and remove any chemicals or compounds.
Other cities in the southwest – like Phoenix and Tucson – have plans for similar facilities. .
The Alpine City Council meets Tuesday to discuss – among other agenda items – the “wild hog problem” in the city. According to the agenda for the meeting, the council will hear concerns from residents – but isn’t set to take action on possible solutions to the issue.

Later this month, the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve will host its first Open Weekend of the year.

The City of Alpine advises the public that City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, March 5th, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 am for a team meeting. Según el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional de Midland, los fuertes vientos se extenderán por toda la región y, en la zona de Alpine, dicen que las ráfagas podrían alcanzar hasta 80 millas por hora. A esos vientos se unirá un frente frío, que también provocará un día más fresco y seco en el lejano oeste de Texas.

Lo que eso realmente significa es que vamos a estar bastante atentos, y ante cualquier incendio forestal que pueda comenzar, la vegetación en el área, la vegetación que haya, será muy, muy seca y muy, muy susceptible a cualquier tipo de chispas o calor que podría causar que comience a humear y agregar los vientos y podría tener un incendio forestal en sus manos, mencionó.
Stickney dice que, dado el potencial de peligro de incendio, las personas no deben realizar ningún tipo de quema al aire libre durante los próximos días.
Y aunque se espera que la región tenga un breve respiro de los vientos el miércoles, Stickney dice que al final de la semana veremos algunas condiciones de viento regresar.
La ciudad de El Paso ha iniciado la construcción de la primera instalación en los EE. UU. que tratará aguas residuales para su reutilización directa en el suministro de agua de la ciudad.
Según Inside Climate News, el proyecto lleva mucho tiempo en proceso y entrará en funcionamiento en el 2028. Una vez operativa, la instalación traerá aguas residuales tratadas y las someterá a un proceso de purificación de varios pasos. Ese proceso incluye un paso de “ósmosis inversa”, que separa las moléculas de agua de otras sustancias. Luego, se utilizan peróxido de hidrógeno y luz ultravioleta para matar las bacterias en el agua. Otros pasos desinfectan aún más el agua y eliminan cualquier químico o compuesto.
Otras ciudades del suroeste, como Phoenix y Tucson, tienen planes para instalaciones similares.
El Ayuntamiento de Alpine se reúne el martes para discutir – entre otros puntos del orden del día – el “Problema de los cerdos salvajes” en la ciudad. Según el orden del día de la reunión, el consejo escuchará las preocupaciones de los residentes, pero no está dispuesto a tomar medidas sobre posibles soluciones al problema.

A finales de este mes, la Reserva de las Montañas Davis de Nature Conservancy organizará su primer fin de semana abierto del año.
Desde el viernes 14 de marzo hasta el domingo 16 de marzo, podrá explorar las maravillas y las vistas panorámicas de las montañas Davis.
No se requieren reservaciones. Y puede elegir entre acampar, andar en bicicleta de montaña y hacer caminatas. Las puertas de la Reserva se abrirán el próximo viernes a las 8:00 am.
