Good evening, today is Friday, March 31st, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Alpine Independent School District has received a Principal Residency Grant for two teachers through a partnership with Sul Ross State University.
The grant will fund a pathway for two local Alpine I.S.D. teachers to train toward administrative positions.
The grant will pay for all coursework at Sul Ross, a one-year paid apprenticeship and all certification costs to become a certified administrator.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart said this grant will greatly help the district at a time when more teachers are needed and funding has been cut.
Rinehart: “What a blessing this’ll be, and why we were interested in this as a district is it really aligned with one of our goals about how do we grow a local pipeline of Alpine Buck campus leaders.”
The grant was one of the last professional acts by the late education professor Dr. Rebecca Schlosser and Rinehart said the grant is a way of continuing her legacy.
Rinehart: “Before her passing, she helped submit this application and we just found out this week that we were awarded that and so I wanted to just thank her for all the impact she’s had over the years here in the Big Bend and this grant is a way of continuing that impact and influence.”
The district will publish more information as the date gets closer. The recipients will then begin in the summer with the internship beginning next year.
The Alter Ego Free Box Fashion Show will be at the Boathouse Bar in Terlingua starting at 7 Saturday evening.
Proceeds to help fund Voices from Both Sides, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 13 at the historic river crossing in Lajitas.
Voices is the annual Fiesta that brings awareness to the separation between Lajitas, Texas, and Paso Lajitas, Mexico, after the informal crossing was closed because of the 9-11 attacks.
The first Voices event was ten years ago after the government had closed the informal crossings at Lajitas, Boquillas, Redford and Candelaria.
Close relationships, including families, had built up over the years with the ease of crossing the Rio Grande at the informal crossings.
The goal for the fundraiser is three thousand dollars and more models are needed.

The City of Alpine is opening its application window for 2023-24 Hotel Occupancy Tax Grants on Thursday, April 6, with a deadline of Friday, May 5.
A workshop will be at 5:30 April 6 in the City Council chambers with a Zoom link for those who cannot attend in person.
It will cover the application process, legal uses of the grant funds and some changes to how applications will be handled this year.
More detailed information will be required as opposed to past practices when some incomplete applications were accepted in the interest in promoting more events.
The application, guidelines and the Zoom links can be found at City of Alpine-dot-com under “How Do I Apply for Hotel Occupancy Tax Funding.”
Artists Tom Curry, Charlie Bell, Kerry Awn and Nancy Whitlock will host an Art Crawl Saturday, also known as April Fool’s Day.
Three galleries on 6th Street will display art by the artists from 5 to 7 Saturday.
Curry will show paintings at Tex-Pop Gallery, Bell will display mixed media art at Alley View Gallery and Whitlock will show drawings and paintings at her Gallery.
Whitlock said refreshments and good cheer will be served at the museums.
