Joe William Mussey of Alpine died Wednesday, February 25, at his home. He was 95.
Joe grew up in Sanderson, where he spent a busy childhood roaming and exploring the surrounding mountains, looking for rocks and arrowheads at an early age. After graduating, he worked one year at Pyote Bomber Base before joining and serving four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
After receiving an honorable discharge in 1953, Joe used the GI Bill to enroll at Texas Western College in El Paso, where he studied geology.
In the early 1970’s, Joe moved to Pecos to work as a geologist at a sulfur mine. It’s there that he met Joyce Croft met in Pecos at an apartment complex, where many singles lived and visited around the swimming pool. A friendship developed and they were married in 1976 in Stephenville, Texas.
Forty-nine years of marriage were filled with adventures, happy and productive careers, many friends, and all-around good times.
Joe retired from the sulfur mine in 1992 while Joyce resigned from Pecos Schools, and the two started a new chapter of their lives in Fort Davis. Joe supervised the building of their home on Sproul Road while Joyce was Principal of Dirks-Anderson Elementary School.
Joe became involved as a volunteer at CDRI. Soon, he and Jack Burgess began to design and plan the Chihuahuan Desert Mining Heritage Exhibit. Once completed, he presented programs for hundreds of students and adults, sharing his knowledge of geology and mining. Until August 28, 2025, Joe and Joyce travelled weekly to CDRI to help maintain the Mining Exhibit.
Joe is survived by his wife Joyce, brother-in-law, six nieces and nephews as well as many grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), the Texas Department of Transportation holds their first meeting in a series of town halls in Far West Texas on transportation projects.
The meetings will be in Van Horn, Presidio and Alpine – and attendees will have an opportunity to review and weigh-in on proposed projects coming to the region through the department’s rural transportation improvement program.
The first meeting is in Van Horn on Wednesday, March 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hotel El Capitan.
The Alpine meeting is Tuesday, March 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Alpine TxDot office. And the meeting in Presidio will be March 11 at the PAC.

On Thursday, the Archives of the Big Bend will present a talk with author Joe Burgess, who will discuss his book, “Big Bend Through The Lens of Glenn Burgess: A Photo Journey in Mid-Century West Texas.”
The event is part of the archives’ yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary.
Burgess’ book captures the creation of Big Bend National Park with highlights of the surrounding region. And as part of the event, an exhibit of Glenn Burgess’ photographic prints, field equipment and cameras, and ephemera from the early years of Big Bend National Park will be displayed at the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library on the Sul Ross campus.
The talk will be Thursday, March 5, at 5:30 p.m. at Sul Ross.

On Friday, the group No Big Bend Border Wall is hosting a film screening and discussion at the Crowley Theater in Marfa.
The newly formed group will show the documentary “The River and the Wall,” and will have a forum to discuss what a wall could mean for the region.
The screening starts Friday at 7 p.m. The Crowley Theater is located at 98 S. Austin Street.
The group will host a similar event later this month on March 21 in Sanderson.

Beginning next week, the city of Alpine will start accepting applications for the city’s community service grant program.
The program provides grant funding for nonprofits that provide services that benefit people in Alpine. Grant proposals must touch on any of the following areas: basic needs and services for the elderly, basic needs and services for people with lower incomes, educational resources, domestic violence and assault relief, and youth sports and recreation.
Applications can be found online at cityofalpine.com. The window to apply runs from March 9 to Friday, April 17 at 5:00 p.m.

At the same time, the city will also start accepting applications for Hotel Occupancy Tax grants soon.
A workshop on Alpine’s HOT Grant program will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9 in the Alpine City Council Chambers. The workshop will cover the grant application process and legal uses of the HOT funds.

Later this month (MARCH), the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects will host two spring garden workdays.
On March 15 from 9:00 a.m. to noon, the public’s invited to head to the Old School house to help make the front yard more beautiful and useful. A second garden workday will be held March 17.

Mañana (MIÉRCOLES), el Departamento de Transporte de Texas celebrará su primera reunión de una serie de asambleas públicas en el extremo oeste de Texas sobre proyectos de transporte.
Las reuniones se llevarán a cabo en Van Horn, Presidio y Alpine, y los asistentes tendrán la oportunidad de revisar y opinar sobre los proyectos propuestos para la región a través del programa de mejora del transporte rural del departamento.

A partir de la próxima semana, la ciudad de Alpine aceptará solicitudes para su programa de subvenciones para servicios comunitarios.
El programa ofrece subvenciones a organizaciones sin fines de lucro que prestan servicios que benefician a los residentes de Alpine. A finales de este mes (MARZO), la organización local sin fines de lucro Alpine Community Projects organizará dos jornadas de jardinería de primavera.
El 15 de marzo, de 9:00 a. m. a mediodía, se invita al público a visitar la antigua escuela para ayudar a embellecer y mejorar el jardín delantero. El 17 de marzo se realizará una segunda jornada de jardinería.
