The National Weather Service has issued a “fire weather watch” for tomorrow afternoon through the evening – as low relative humidity, above-normal temperatures and stronger wind gusts are expected in the region.
As a result – Guadalupe Mountains National Park this week moved to a “high” fire danger level. That means that in addition to existing park fire regulations, there are new measures:
For the time being, smoking is now limited to inside a vehicle. No open fires are permitted anywhere in the park, but the use of gas canister stoves for cooking is still allowed at this time.
Spirits of the West is returning to Alpine next month. The two-day festival is a celebration of Texas spirits — from wines and drinks like tequila and vodka to the craft brews that reflect the culture and heritage of the Lone Star State.
The two-day festival will take place on the lawn of the Brewster County Courthouse and the surrounding streets of Sul Ross and 6th Street in downtown Alpine on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26.

In other festival news, the dates for this year’s Big Bend Blue Grass Festival were announced earlier this week.
The event will take place at the Alpine Civic Center on October 3rd and 4th. And will feature artists like the Larry Stephenson Band and Purple Hulls.

Join the Big Bend Natural History Association and Michael Price from Wild About Texas to learn more about the diverse reptile species native to the state.
From rattlesnakes and lizards to alligators and turtles, the educational program is designed to foster a deeper appreciation for the reptiles of the state.
The discussion will be tonight at 7:00 and tomorrow morning at 9:30. Both programs will be in the community room at the Panther Junction visitor center.
Next Saturday is Terlingua Cleanup – a chance to easily get rid of large junk and household rubbish.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 – Brewster County trucks will accept your trash. A separate tire trailer will also be on hand to receive old tires. County Trucks will haul your junk off to the landfill. The disposal location for Terlingua will be at the road and bridge yard on FM170.
Getting rid of bulk trash is free to all Brewster County residents. The trucks will accept household trash – like mattresses and appliances as well as discarded building materials and yard waste.
Marathon’s cleanup day will be Saturday, April 26.
Next weekend, join the Jeff Davis County Library for an author forum on West Texas history. Jason Stone, author of The Beauty of Days Gone By and Larry Francell, author of My Summer Vacation: The Victorio Campaign Journal of Robert Grieson 1880 will speak at the library in Fort Davis Saturday, April 5 at 3 pm.
Starting in April, Big Bend Ranch State Park will host a series of springtime events, starting with Art in the Park on Monday, April 14 at the Contrabando Movie Set.
All programs are free with the purchase of entrance fees, which are $5 per person, children under 12 are free.
