March 28th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Tuesday, March 28th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

Alpine School Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart has announced the Alpine High School teachers Cory Cason and Renee Parson are the new 2023 Fund for Teachers fellows.

They each received a $10,000 grant to fund a professional learning experience that simultaneously informs their curiosity and impacts their students.

Their award-winning submission, “Spies Like Us,” will fund a travel experience where they follow in the footsteps of ordinary women who became exceptional WW Two spies.

Virginia Hall, Noor Inayat Khan and Josephine Baker traveled through Europe despite rigid societal norms and great personal danger.

Based on these travel experiences, Cason and Parson will create a podcast and teaching materials that bring home their learning from Europe.

Sul Ross State University’s student-run newspaper, The Skyline, won two awards at the spring convention of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association last week in Fort Worth.

Editor Brooke Manuel of Midland, a senior majoring in English, won first place in General News Division Four for her report on the aftermath of the school shooting at Uvalde.

Kris Porter, who graduated in December, won third place in Cartoon Strip Panel in Divisions Three and Four for “Gender Neutral Homecoming.”

And Advisor Sidney Balman, Jr., presented a workshop at the conference called, “From War Correspondent to Novelist: The Bridge Between Journalism and Fiction.”

Balman covered wars in the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo and later traveled with U.S. Presidents and secretaries of state on overseas diplomatic missions.

The Skyline is updated frequently online at sulrossskyline.com.

The Alpine Public Library will bring back Family Science Night at 6:30 Saturday with various scientific experiments for children from kindergarten through 6th grade.

Children’s Librarian Mary Beth Garrett said children will receive a clipboard and booklet and explore experimentation stations with activities that reflect scientific concepts.

Garrett: “Family Science Night is an evening of joyful science. It’s a chance to play your science if you will.”

Stations include Magnetic Madness, Tornado in a bottle, frequency fun, illusion spinner, siphons of science and many more.

Garret said about 20 kids altogether including local teenagers and students from the Sul Ross Geology club will help her bring the program back since the pandemic shut it down.

Garrett: “I miss it, and I think it’s just going to be a lot of fun. It’s really fun to put it together and it’s really fun once it all starts going and nobody needs me because everyone’s just doing their thing.”
