Funeral services will be at 10 Saturday at Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Alpine for John Howard Finley of Alpine, who died Monday in El Paso at age 87.
John was born on December 12, 1936, in Marfa and grew up in Presidio County riding horses and his donkey in Marfa and Presidio.
On January 13, 1957, he married the love of his life Ethelene Roberts and they built a family. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone before retiring after 42 years of service. He was an avid sportsman and heavily involved in the annual Bloys camp meeting in Jeff Davis County. John was preceded in death by his sister and a grandson.
Surviving are his wife, three sons, a daughter, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Online condolences may be left at alpinememorialfuneralhome.com
Dollar General has announced plans to remodel and update two of its four Alpine locations at 105 North 15th Street and the newest store at 1911 N. State Highway 118.
They will become D.G. Market stores in early April and will offer expanded produce, refrigerated and frozen food and dairy products along with its other merchandise.
A press release Wednesday said fresh produce will include a curated assortment of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, apples, strawberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, limes and more.
Dollar General’s produce set offers the top 20 items typically sold in traditional grocery stores and covers approximately 80 percent of produce categories most grocery stores carry.
A Brewster County Deputy conducted a traffic stop south of Marathon Tuesday afternoon and discovered seven illegal migrants, including the driver identified as Christian Rodriguez Vega.
The six passengers were taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol agents, who also responded.
Rodriguez was booked into the Brewster County Jail for six counts of smuggling of persons. He will answer for those charges before being referred to Border Patrol for deportation.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has joined 21 other House Republicans in a letter about the unprecedented surge in apprehensions along our northern border.
The missive to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas notes Border Patrol agents arrested more than ten thousand aliens crossing between ports of entry in fiscal 2023.
That included more than 22 hundred in the first four months of that year. In the first four months of Fiscal 2024, more than 47 hundred have crossed the northern border.
The letter notes the southern border already has been overrun with drug smugglers and said we cannot allow another avenue for deadly, illegal drugs into our communities.

The Alpine Kiwanis Club will host the annual Easter Egg Hunt the day before, at 10 Saturday at Kokernot Park.
When the hunt starts, the eggs get picked up quickly and by 10:05 most of the eggs will have been found, so don’t be late.
Three age divisions will allow the youngest hunters to have a chance and, of course, plenty of candy and prizes.
The Easter Bunny will be there and it is free and fun for families to enjoy the outdoors with their young ones.
