Good evening, today is Thursday, March 24th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Funeral services were pending for long-time Alpine resident Charlene L. Ripley, who died Sunday in an Odessa Hospital at age 88.
She was born in Hamlin, Texas, on March 30, 1933, and has lived in Alpine since 1943.
Charlene owned and rode horses and played bass guitar for the Alpine Mountaineers.
She is survived by her husband Johnny and two of her four children.
Alpine has a new fire chief, replacing Mike Scudder, who died in December.
The Alpine Avalanche this week introduced us to new Volunteer Fire Chief Andrew Pierce, originally from Lubbock.
He came to Sul Ross State University about ten years ago and joined the fire department.
Later he became an Emergency Medical Technician to work in the department’s ambulance service, then owned by the late twins Mark and Mike Scudder.
After Mike died more than three years after his brother, the department elected Pierce as fire chief and Charles Worden as assistant chief.
The department is responsible for fire and medical emergencies in north Brewster County along with the Marathon Fire Department.
Since Mike Scudder’s death in December, Greg Henington and his Terlingua Fire and E.M.S. have been providing emergency medical care to the area.
The City Council and County Commissioners both agreed last week to let Emergent Air of El Paso provide the medical arm of the service after April 30 when Henington’s contract expires.
The Jeff Davis County Library will host a ribbon cutting for the new Virtual Connection “Tele-Med” Center at 2 p.m. Saturday at 100 Memorial Square.
It will be followed by a community health fair.
The Tele-Med Center will be a special room for telehealth appointments and other confidential online or in-person meetings free to the public through reservations.
Afterwards, health information will be offered on discount programs on health care and prescriptions, assistance with health care bills and resources for wellness.
Citizens will be able to meet and talk to representatives of Mobile Comunidad, Jeff Davis County Indigent Health Care Fund and the Jeff Davis County Food Pantry.
Representatives from Charlie Cart, Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend, Dr. Richard Gluck, High Desert Yoga and the Mobile Mortician at Davis Mountains Funeral Hall will be present.
Project Graduation will host a golf tournament fundraiser from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Alpine Country Club at 1011 Loop Road.
The three-person scramble is available at 240 dollars per team or 80 dollars per person. Registration will be from 8:30 to 10:30 with tee time at 11.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each flight, five-dollar mulligans or three for 10 dollars are available and food will be served on the course during play.

The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an auction and sale of two stray horses at 10 a.m. Saturday April 2 at the Presidio County pens at Vizcaino Park in Marfa.
The first is a three-year-old cream-colored horse 15 hands tall and about 900 to twelve-hundred pounds and is a stallion with black halter.
The second is an 18-year-old chestnut-colored horse 14 hands tall and also 900 to twelve-hundred pounds and is a gelding with red halter.
