Good evening, today is Thursday, March 23rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Sul Ross Theatre Program will premiere Lauren Gunderson’s “Silent Sky” at 7:30 tomorrow at the Marshall Auditorium in the Morelock Academic Building.
The play is a true story about American astronomer Henrietta Leavitt who worked at the Harvard Observatory at the start of the 20th Century.
She discovered a method of measuring a star’s distance from earth, which was groundbreaking at the time and led to further discoveries about the vastness of the universe.
Graduate student Olivia Pertuso of Alpine, who plays Leavitt, said acting as someone who actually existed was a first that let her gain a deeper appreciation for the role.
Pertuso: “Previous to the show I did not know much about her life or about her really at all. It was fascinating to learn about her story and her discovery and how she really laid the groundwork for these amazing scientific discoveries to happen.”
Co-star Justin Hinton of Dallas, who plays the love interest in the play, said the play recognizes these discoveries when at the time only other astronomers appreciated Leavitt.
Hinton: “Even then the recognition that they received was ‘Oh yeah, thanks guys. Thumbs up but get back to work, please.’ Whereas now we’re able to kind of take a look back at their story and see Hubble wouldn’t have been able to do the work he did without Henrietta’s work.”
The play will run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2 until April 2 with tickets at 15 dollars for general admission and 10 dollars for children and seniors.

The Chinati Foundation has invited area adults to a free, two-day workshop exploring landscape drawing and painting en plein air from 9 to 3 Saturday and Sunday.
Led by artist Kb Jones and assisted by Chinati’s education team, the workshop will consist of instruction in drawing and painting fundamentals.
It will include observational walks and an opportunity to experiment with mixed media techniques.
Participants should wear closed toed shoes and can expect a fair amount of walking throughout the workshop.
Light snacks and water will be provided and attendees will have an hour each day for a bring-your-own lunch.

Easter Sunday will be April 9 and Easter Egg Hunts have been scheduled the day before at both Alpine and Marathon – along with much of the rest of the world.
The Alpine Kiwanis Club will host its Hunt at 10 a.m. sharp April 8 at Kokernot Park. The event has been a major event on the Alpine Calendar for more than 30 years.
There is no fee or registration but organizer Rhonda Cole said it goes really fast so participants can’t be late or it will all be over.
The Easter Bunny will help run the hunt and prize eggs will be among the “loot.” For more information, contact Cole at 294-0956.
And the Marathon Public Library announced its Hunt at 1 p.m. on the green behind the Community Center.
The Easter egg hunt will be followed by hotdogs served at 1:30. The event is organized by the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and Marathon Public Library.

El Programa de Teatro Sul Ross estrenará “Silent Sky” de Lauren Gunderson a las 7:30 mañana en el Auditorio Marshall en el Edificio Académico Morelock.
La obra es una historia real sobre la astrónoma estadounidense Henrietta Leavitt, quien trabajó en el Observatorio de Harvard a principios del siglo 20.

La Fundación Chinati ha invitado a los adultos del área a un taller gratuito de dos días que explora el dibujo y la pintura de paisajes al aire libre de 9 a 3 el sábado y el domingo.

El Alpine Kiwanis Club organizará su búsqueda a las 10 a. m. en punto el 8 de abril en Kokernot Park. El evento ha sido un evento importante en el calendario de Alpine durante más de 30 años.
No hay tarifa ni registro, pero la organizadora Rhonda Cole dijo que va muy rápido asi que los participantes no puedan llegar tarde o todo habrá terminado.
