Good evening, today is Wednesday, March 23rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The El Paso District of the Texas Department of Transportation will host a series of public open houses on the Rural Statewide Transportation Improvement Program for 2023 through 26.
The plan is a program of projects developed by the district in cooperation with rural planning organizations that covers a four-year period.
The document contains a prioritized listing of all projects including regionally-significant projects proposed for state, federal and local funding in all areas of the district.
TxDot will present information and gather feedback in one virtual and three in-person meetings.
A virtual public meeting will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday by zoom.
Next will be a meeting in Van Horn from 4 to 6 Tuesday at the Van Horn Convention Center and Visitors Bureau at 1801 A. West Broadway.
Then on Wednesday next week, a meeting will be from 4 to 6 at the Alpine Civic Center at 100 North 13th Street.
The last will be in Presidio Thursday at the Presidio Activity Center at 1400 East O’Reilly Street also from 4 to 6 p.m.

Brewster County Deputies and US Border Patrol agents continue tracking illegal migrants and smugglers in the area.
They encountered a group of suspects through mountainous terrain south of Alpine Tuesday morning.
By late afternoon they were assisted by D.P.S. Air Operations and arrested a group of 13 illegal immigrants from Mexico. They were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
The next production of the Sul Ross Theatre Program “The Cake” opens Friday in the Studio Theatre.
It tells the story of Della, a sweet-natured Christian baker, who is asked to make a cake for a gay wedding and is forced to re-examine her beliefs and definition of love.
“The Cake,” a comedy by Bekah Brunstetter, was first produced in 2017 by the Echo Theatre Company in Los Angeles and premiered off Broadway in 2019 at the Manhattan Theatre Club.
Director Marjie Scott said the play deals with issues of religious freedom and same-sex marriage from a very personal perspective.
She said the play also is hopeful and funny, which is refreshing in these polarized times. Scott is associate professor of Theatre and Communication.
“The Cake” runs weekends through April 10 in the Studio Theatre at Sul Ross in Alpine.
It contains mature themes, language and partial nudity and parental guidance is recommended.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
Tickets are 12 dollars for general admission, 10 for seniors over 65 and free for veterans and active military.

The Alpine Public Library will host this year’s Patio Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Library at 805 West Avenue E.
People still can donate items like books, clothes, jewelry, furniture, decor and more to be sold. Simply drop them off inside the front patio during library hours.
