Our Congressman Tony Gonzales cited his mistrust of President Biden for his “no” vote on the second package of Fiscal Year 2024 funding bills, which passed the House Friday 339 to 85.
The 460-million-dollar package includes appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security, among others.
It is designed to prevent a government shutdown by funding the government through the end of the fiscal year September 30.
Gonzales said he helped craft H.R. 2 earlier, which he called the strongest border security legislation in decades, It passed the House but was never taken up by the Senate.
He said the current measure is woefully inadequate. It does nothing to fix asylum loopholes, end catch and release or stop the abuse of paroling authorities by the Biden administration.
We can and must do better, Gonzales said. Our national security is at stake.
A 37-year-old Alpine man is in jail charged with two felonies after a brief standoff with police offers and sheriff’s deputies Thursday evening.
It started with police responding to a report of shots fired in the 1300 block of West Murphy Street.
Witnesses identified the shooter as Jose Angel Rodriguez. Officers said they approached him and he brandished a firearm and went into his home.
He was arrested after a brief standoff and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Terroristic Threat toward a peace officer.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office said those in the area of the Brewster County courthouse lawn may have noticed a void where the artillery piece should be.
Nobody stole the gun. It’s just being sent for repairs and paint to help protect it for many years to come. It will be back.
The Big Bend Bluegrass Association said this week that March is Women’s History Month and it highlighted some influential women in the world of bluegrass music as examples.
It said despite the industry’s male predominance, these women have made and continue to make significant strides and they were featured in this month’s newsletter.
One Texas stands out among the women featured this month. Texan Lynn Morris has carved her own path in the bluegrass industry.
Other historic figures include women like Mother Maybelle Carter and Ole Belle Reed and the 1960s saw Hazel and Alice leaving their indelible prints in the genre.
Today, we have artists like Claire Lynch, Alison Krauss, Rhonda Vincent and Molly Tuttle shaping the future of bluegrass.
It noted this was the beginning of a monthly featured bluegrass artist in the Bluegrass newsletter.
The Alpine Public Library will present an Alpine Dark Skies Celebration at 9 p.m. April 5 and 6 at Kokernot Park and a program on the sixth at the Visitor Center from 1 to 4 that afternoon.
For the park, the program begins both nights at 9 at the soccer field. Guests should bring their own chairs.
The Saturday show will have live music, kids’ story time, information on night-sky-friendly- lighting and solar eclipse glasses for the eclipse to come from 1 to 4 Monday, the eighth.
Then music under the stars will begin at 8:30.
And the library announced First Wednesday Yoga continues at the library on April 3.
The class lasts from 3:30 to 4:30 and you can sign up at the library or by using the online form on the library’s Facebook page.
