Funeral services will be Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church near Fort Stockton for Joe Ben Gallego of Fort Stockton, who died Saturday.
Praying of the Rosary will be at 9 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10.
A military burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a luncheon will be served at the Fort Stockton Community Theater, F.M.H. Hall.
The Lone Star Poetry Gathering Board agreed Monday that future events need to keep the “gathering” and its concept mind in “keeping the tradition alive.”
As it began planning for the next Alpine gathering, tentatively set for February 24 and 25 next year, the board affirmed that the present format should continue.
A question arose over whether better-known performers should present only in the ticketed evening events. But many said that would harm the concept of a familial gathering.
Some other gatherings across the country have become less relevant by adopting a “cowboy show” format featuring big name performers.
Instead of named performers “getting off a bus and performing and then getting back on the bus,” gathering performers and fans mix in a two-day social event, which fans like much better.
Many of the regular performers at the Alpine event are well-known but this year’s event drew wide praise for keeping the friendly “gathering” atmosphere.
Many performers and fans alike said this year’s Alpine gathering was “the best ever.”
The Lone Star Board was created in 2019 when the Texas Board disbanded after 33 successful seasons.
The first Lone Star event was in 2020, just before the Covid pandemic struck. The 2021 show was virtual with filmed presentations instead of in-person shows.
This year’s gathering in Alpine last month was among the first such events after the pandemic waned.
Brewster County Republican Chair Monica McBride has announced two meetings this week of interest to area Republicans.
The County Republican Precinct and County Conventions for Senate Districts 19 and 29 will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at The Stable at 511 West Holland Avenue.
Among agenda items is election of delegates for the Republican State Convention in Houston, June 16 to 18.
To attend, delegates must have voted in the Republican Primary or be willing to sign an “Oath of Affiliation.”
And the West of the Pecos Republican Women’s Club will have its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, also at the Stable.
It will include a Meet and Greet with local candidates in the General Election in November and two County Judge candidates in the Runoff Election May 24.
The winner of that race will be in the General Election.
Also on the agenda is a presentation on Border information by Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs Director Kelly Perry.
A reception to mark the close of the “Texas as Art” exhibition at the Museum of the Big Bend will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 1.
The exhibit is the brainchild of Rebecca Dodge, an emeritus geology professor who spent summer holidays at her parents’ cabin in the Davis Mountains Resort.
She has created digitally enhanced satellite images that show the various eco-regions of West Texas.
Each image’s caption has a Q.R. code that viewers can scan with their phones to learn more about what they see.
The satellite images are complemented by original oil paintings of West Texas landscapes and flora by Fort Davis artist Liz Bartlett Culp.
The exhibition will be at 4 p.m. Saturday April 2 after gallery talks by both artists, starting at 1.
The reception and gallery talks are free to members and five dollars for nonmembers.
