March 20th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Monday, March 20th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The Alpine City Council will be presented with a resolution Tuesday offered by the Night Sky Team on the importance of keeping city skies dark.

Mayor Catherine Eaves will present the resolution as the first item of business at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

It notes International Dark Sky Week during the week of the new moon in April and this year it will be observed from April 15 to 22.

The Night Sky Team has been working with the city to get compliance with a new Dark Skies ordinance, a rule similar to that adopted by all area jurisdictions.

Because of all of the new ordinances, we are now part of the largest Dark Sky Reserve in the world.

It extends from north of Balmorhea on the north to the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Coahuila south of Big Bend National Park.

In information discussions at the beginning of the meeting, City Manager Megan Antrim will report on a grant she is seeking to upgrade the city’s wastewater treatment system.

And there will be a public hearing and possible action on parking restrictions around Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church to accommodate mobility-limited seniors and other needs.

Registration closes Friday for Sul Ross State University’s Second Annual Women’s Conference with speakers, different panels and more.

All Sul Ross Students, faculty and staff, area High School students and community members are invited to attend the conference from 9 to 2 Friday next week at the Marshall Auditorium.

This year’s keynote speaker is America’s first Latina commercial airline pilot Olga E. Custodio and the Luncheon Speaker is award-winning author Guadalupe Garcia McCall.

Custodio rose through the U.S. Air Force ranks from Puerto Rico all the way to become the first Latina to pilot the Northrop T-38 Talon supersonic jet trainer, which she said wasn’t easy.

Custodio: “I was my biggest advocate, I have to say, making sure that I was given the same opportunity as my male counterparts.”

She then moved on to become a pilot instructor, training other pilots to become instructors.

After more than eight years of active duty, she transitioned into the reserves while working as an airline pilot, totaling more than 24 years of service.

Custodio: “I have to say that of both uniforms that I wore throughout my professional career I was very proud of my Air Force uniform and to serve this country that I think is a wonderful place to live.”

Custodio said this women’s conference will be a huge step for women who attend because it shows they’re investing in their future and themselves.

Custodio: “To me, knowledge is power and what they’re going to take away from this conference is going to be huge.”

Panel topics include Women and Change, Women and the Glass Ceiling, Women in a Male-Dominated Field, Women and Emotional Labor and Women and Violence.

Refreshments and prizes will also be available. To register, visit srinfo.sulross.edu/womens-conference/registration/.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
