Good evening, today is Wednesday, March 1st, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The emergency siren in Alpine will have its monthly test at 6 today, just a few minutes from now, in its regular first Wednesday of the month test.
It is tested at 6 every first Wednesday.
The Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University will use a million-dollar grant from the Department of Education to create a graduate degree in anthropology by 2025.
Anthropology is the study of the development of human beings.
Most of the funding will be used to hire three Ph.D.-level faculty for three-year appointments to help expand and develop anthropology courses and regional research programs.
Several highly qualified candidates have already expressed interest in the positions.
Center Director Dr. Bryon Schroeder said there is no reason why Sul Ross cannot be a world- class educational leader in the field, and that is the goal.
The Center for Big Bend Studies is the premier anthropological research facility in the Big Bend.
The grant was secured through the office of our Congressman Tony Gonzales.
The Alpine Independent School Board of Trustees has approved the hiring of Coach Andy Smith as the next Athletic Director and Head Football Coach of the Fightin’ Bucks.
Coach Smith comes from Gregory-Portland school district where he served as the offensive coordinator, running game coordinator, offensive line Coach and track coach.
He also served as a special education and history teacher. Coach Smith is in his 15th year in public education.
He has been a proven offensive coordinator, designing offenses that have finished in the top 10 in Texas in rushing yards and averaging over 30 points per game.
He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2006, where he played in 33 games on the offensive line.
Coach Smith began his coaching career at the collegiate level at the Miners as a graduate assistant coach working with the offensive line.
He was chosen from 45 applicants and said he was attracted to the position due to the enthusiasm of the leadership team and Alpine’s welcoming community.
Smith: “Really just looking forward to bringing a great program and what we can offer the kids here in Alpine.”
Coach Smith said he’s looking forward to hit the ground running and bring his experience to elevate the athletic program at Alpine I.S.D.
Smith: “Our vision is to build quality young men and women to be champions through life and athletics. It’s our responsibility as educators to make our young people better people. And so our goal of our athletic program is to be a leadership factory.”
Coach Smith will meet with Alpine coaches, players, and staff this week, with a projected start date of Monday, March 27.
A team at Big Bend National Park will cut down and apply herbicide to invasive salt cedars in the Hot Springs and Rio Grande Village area this weekend.
Visitors may encounter a temporary closure along the river from Gravel Pit to Daniels Ranch Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Salt cedar, also known as Tamarisk, is an aggressive non-native group of closely related trees.
These plants crowd out native species, trap sediment and consume large amounts of water.
A resource crew will cut and treat trees along the Rio Grande from Gravel Pit to Daniels Ranch, including Hot Springs Canyon.
By removing these invasive trees, the Rio Grande can better transport sediment downstream, opening up gravel bars and wider floodplains.
The Solar Park Fire in Jeff Davis County has not seen any spread this week.
Better mapping has revised the acreage estimate to 28 hundred and 16 acres with containment now at 50%.
Firefighters will continue cleaning up the hop spots in the interior but high winds from the south-west were predicted into Thursday.
