Is it too soon to start thinking about the Fourth of July? It’s not for a fairly-new non-profit, the Alpine Community Projects.
A.C.P. founder Kirsten Moody has notified members and others that the nation’s birthday will be on the agenda for its next meeting at 5:30 Wednesday, March 27, on the county courthouse lawn.
She wrote that for the last 50 years or so, the Kiwanis Club of Alpine has organized our Fourth of July celebration, from the parade, to the town gathering, to the fireworks, they did it all.
Its head for many years was Rhonda Cole and her mother Shirley Bieler oversaw it all but Bieler died recently and Cole asked someone else to take it over.
And several community non-profits have stepped up to fill the gap.
The Lion’s Club has agreed to handle vendor sign-up and organization, the Guadalupanas and Knights of Columbus will coordinate the parade and the return of Sweet Bingo.
Historic Alpine will organize the event, including installing flags along the parade route and other logistical support as needed.
Kiwanis and Alpine Firefighters will coordinate the fireworks display and music at Kokernot Park and Field.
And Alpine Community Projects will organize events and run a fun booth at the park, such as fishing booth, snow cones, dunking booth, wheel spin and the like.
Roles for the Alpine Woman’s Club and the Alpine Business Alliance have not been determined.

Among other business Tuesday, the Alpine City Council will be asked to approve a resolution dealing with a proposed rate increase by A.E.P. Texas for electric service.
The company proposes a rate increase of about 13 percent for the power and nine percent for transmission rates to deal with increased costs from a severe ice storm in February of 2021.
The deep freeze came just as the country was dealing with unusual expenses brought about by the Covic epidemic.
The city has expressed an interest in working with other cities in similar circumstances.
It also plans to hire the firm Lloyd Gosselink Attorneys and Consulting Services of Austin to help prepare its case.
The power company said in its background information that it will reimburse cities for some of their expenses in dealing with the rate increases.
Also on the agenda is a public hearing and action on second reading the repeal of part of an ordinance dealing with a curfew for minors.
The action was approved reluctantly at the last council meeting. Members said they did not want to repeal the curfew but it was mandated earlier by the Texas Legislature.
The meeting will be at 5:30 Tuesday after a workshop on wastewater rates at 4 in the City Council Chambers at 803 West Holland Avenue.
Alpine School District’s Our Spring Book Fair started Monday and run from 4 to 6 Tuesday and Wednesday at the Elementary School Library.

Entre otros asuntos del martes, se le pedirá al Ayuntamiento de Alpine que apruebe una resolución que trata sobre un aumento de tarifas propuesto por A.E.P. Texas para el servicio eléctrico.
La compañía propone un aumento de tarifas de alrededor del 13 por ciento para la energía y del nueve por ciento para las tarifas de transmisión para hacer frente al aumento de costos debido a una severa tormenta de hielo en febrero de 2021.
