Good evening, today is Friday, March 18th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
County Treasurer Julie Morton survived two recounts and continued to hold her job Friday – by one vote.
Challenger Lorene Villanueva paid for a recount after an earlier recount showed she was behind by four votes after trailing by three on Election Day.
The second recount Friday morning gave Morton 386 votes to 385 for Villanueva.
County Democrat Party Chair Mary Bell Lockhart said that count now is the official vote to be canvassed with the Secretary of State and then filed.
Asked if she would contest the recount, Villanueva said, in her words, “I’ll take today’s numbers.”
She had put 800 dollars on deposit with the county for Friday’s recount. Lockhart said when the county bills the party, it will be paid from the deposit.
If it is less than the deposit, Villanueva will get the balance refunded to her.
Lockhart said the Friday exercise counted all 836 votes cast in person or by mail. Of those, 92 chose not to vote in that race, although they did in at least some other races.
She said many Democrats crossed over to vote in the Republican Primary and, had they voted in the Democrat Party, the outcome might have been different.
In Texas, voters do not register by party and can vote in whatever primary they choose.
Sul Ross State University will host an intellectual property workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 31 at the Espino Conference Room.
The workshop is geared towards helping inventors, small business owners and artists.
The Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts will conduct the workshop.
It will be broken into three sessions with the first designed to provide an overview and introduction to intellectual property law.
The second is a break-out session with the four concurrent tracks of software, mechanical or electrical inventions, consumer products and art.
The final session will consist of 20-minute one-on-one consultations between lawyers and participants.
A new Center for Land Stewardship and Stakeholder Engagement has been established at the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University.
The new center will facilitate conservation efforts in far West Texas by providing technical resources for landowners, energy developers, community members and conservation partners.
Its goals include providing science-based guidance, offering resources and technical guidance and serving as a conservation liaison and convener for principal conservation partners.
Landowners can participate in their West Native Seeds Program and the Habitat and Rangeland Research, learn about the Respect Big Bend Process and receive on-the-ground services.
B.R.I. also is working to foster the energy sector in a positive way by providing values-based assistance and information to energy industry representatives.
B.R.I. also is helping the community through the Respect Big Bend Coalition and the Tri-County Stakeholder Advisory Group.

The Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occur when the sun is directly over the Equator and day and night are supposedly of equal length.
The Vernal Equinox is the official start of spring.
The Sun doesn’t actually move north and south to give us the four seasons. The earth rotates on a tilted axis so the part facing the sun changes as the earth orbits the sun.
Some say the earth “wobbles” but it’s the tilted axis and rotation around the sun that gives us our changing weather.
