March 17th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Friday, March 17th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

In spite of the temperature outside, Spring will be here Monday.

Vernal Equinox is what they call it and it will arrive at 4:24 Monday afternoon.

That is the exact time the sun officially will be over the equator and days and nights will be as close as ever to exactly the same length.

It’s been unusually warm for this early in the season – until Friday when we woke up to temperatures below freezing.

Spring will bring some warmer temperatures in the 50s and into the 70s by Tuesday.

This year’s annual Spirits of the West Wine and Beef Fest by Alpine’s Gallery Night will be April 21 and 22.

The street festival will be on 6th Street, between Holland and Avenue E, and The Granada Theatre will host music events Friday and Saturday evening.

The street festival will be from 4 to 7 April 21 with wine makers, spirit distillers and brew masters, together with beef producers and chefs from across Texas.

Fly Gap Winery, Chateau Wright Winery and Farm Ale Brewing Company will host their first-ever festival kickoff party, Spirits After Dark that evening in the Granada.

The party will include food and wine and the funkadelic bands Spicy Loops at 7, followed by Feline Fox at 9.

Day two, April 22, opens at 10 with the reopening of the gates to the street festival with wine, spirits, art vendors and live music acts performing throughout the day.

That night. the doors will open at The Granada Theatre for Cody Canada and The Departed concert, with opening band Anthony Ray Wright.

Show times are 6 and 7 for Anthony Ray Wright, and 9 for Cody Canada and The Departed.

This is the second year of the festival with the goal of continuing to celebrate the rich heritage of West Texas beef production with the growing wine industry across the state.

Tickets for the events are now on sale at spiritsfestwtx.eventbrite.com. For more information visit spiritsfestwtx.com.

The City of Alpine has set the schedule for next year’s grant applications for use of Hotel Occupancy Tax funds, known as HOT funds, for the fiscal year beginning October 1.

The tax is supported by the state hotel and lodging association and must be used to encourage out of-town visitors, or so-called “heads in beds.”

The application window will open Monday, April 6, with a deadline of Friday, May 5, for activities happening in the coming fiscal year.

A workshop will be at 5:30 April 6 in the City Council Chambers to go over the application process and some changes in how the HOT Committee will review the applications.

The biggest change is that the requirements in the application will actually be required.

The city has for years approved some applications with incomplete paperwork in the spirit of encouraging events.

Now the required event report and the attachments like budgets, marketing plan, and the like will have to be included or the HOT Committee will not review it or pass it to City Council.

The Big Bend Sentinel reported this week that Steve Marquez, Marfa’s chief of police since the department’s re-formation in 2017, abruptly resigned last week.

A new tool Marfa Independent School District introduced alongside other government agencies is allowing parents to prepare in their child’s post-high-school success.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
