Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has written to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken following reports of an uptick in Americans being killed and kidnapped by cartels.

Gonzales said he was responding to two incidents at the southern border.

The first happened two weeks ago, in which four Americans were kidnapped by the Gulf Cartel in broad daylight in Matamoros across from Brownsville, two of them killed.

The second came to light last weekend when three more Americans went missing in Mexico and hadn’t been heard from in almost three weeks.

Gonzales wrote that criminal cartel syndicates have never been as powerful as they are today, wreaking havoc with impunity in Mexico and spurring violent crimes in the U.S.

The Alpine Avalanche reported in a Page One story this week that Medic Outpost will have a fundraiser Saturday to raise money as well as awareness of and for their mission.

The non-profit focuses on the development of community healthcare in rural areas.

While the organization has global reach, providing services in Africa, Mexico and the United States, the overall approach is the same.

Rural areas have limited or non-existent access to healthcare and this is where Medic Outpost comes in.

Their primary goal is to train community members to be first responders, augment available healthcare workers skills and their knowledge base.

The Helping Hands fundraiser will be at 2 Saturday at the High Sierra Bar and Grill, starting with the music of Butch and Rory Hancock.

It will continue with music by Chet O’Keefe, Randy and Dr. Fun, The Moon Shiners, Hank Woji and Lee Wright.

Food and other vendors will be present and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Big Bend Sentinel reported this week that Steve Marquez, Marfa’s chief of police since the department’s re-formation in 2017, abruptly resigned last week.

Marquez told the paper that what he called “certain aspects” of his personal life were being pushed aside and he needed to put them first.

Lieutenant Gilbert Carillo will serve as interim chief as the city begins the process of appointing a new chief.

Caitlin Murray of Marfa, the longtime director of archives and programs at the Judd Foundation, has been named The Chinati Foundation’s new executive director, effective in May.

She told the Big Bend Sentinel she feels tremendously excited to work with the staff of the Chinati Foundation and the Marfa community.

The Foundation is an art museum based upon the ideas of its founder, Donald Judd, whose emphasis is on works in which art and the surrounding land are inextricably linked.

Continuará con música de Chet O’Keefe, Randy and Dr. Fun, The Moon Shiners, Hank Woji y Lee Wright.
