Good evening, today is Wednesday, March 16th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Brewster County Commissioners and Alpine City Council met at the same time Tuesday and both chose Emergent Air to operate an ambulance service in northern Brewster County.
The votes were for a joint contract to replace West Texas Ambulance Service, which had been providing the service before its founder Mike Scudder died in December.
Emergent of El Paso operates a fleet of ground and air ambulances in cities in much of Texas.
Greg Henington and his Terlingua E.M.S. was providing the service under a four-month contract that expires next month and Henington headed a task force to find a replacement.
Emergent was one of three candidates to apply and Henington said any of the three could provide satisfactory service.
County Judge Eleazar Cano repeated that a county-operated service could be another option but Henington said that could take the rest of the year to get it set up.
Cano said any contract could be relatively short-termed, a year or two, and other options could still exist after the contract runs out.
Scudder served Alpine and northern Brewster County under contracts with each.
A recount in the March 1 Democrat Primary race for county treasurer confirmed that incumbent Julie Morton won a close race against Lorene Villanueva.
The recount gave Morton 390 votes, four ahead of challenger Villanueva’s 386. On election day, the margin was three, 387 to 384.
County Chair Mary Bell Lockhart said the party will canvass the new total and, if it stands, Morton will be elected.
She will be the nominee for the Democrat party but, with no Republican in the race, winning the primary is tantamount to election.
Lockhart said the canvass this week will tell the party, in her words, “what we do going forward.”
A reception will be Friday with the Dark Skies exhibit now on display at Alpine’s Gallery on the Square. The show will run until April 19
It celebrates our area’s potential membership in the Dark Sky Reserve now being created that, if it is successful, would be the largest such reserve in the world.
Dark Skies help scientists at McDonald Observatory study the heavens but also boosts tourism by bringing in visitors who often cannot see the stars from their light-polluted cities.
It also helps reduce power costs and provides better lighting on the ground.
The reception will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 18, and is open to the public.
It will feature demonstrations on how to determine if outdoor lighting is shining downward and illuminating the ground instead of into the sky.

It is spring break for area students but Marfa High School is not idle.
Local law enforcement agencies are using it for Active Shooter Level One training provided by ALERRT, which stands for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.
The training will continue throughout the week with the second training allowing local E.M.S. and Fire Departments to participate.
The purpose of the training is to have an understanding of each emergency department’s role during and after an active shooter situation.
The City of Alpine is looking for more volunteer firefighters to serve the community.
Men and women 18 years of age or older are welcome to put in an application to become a firefighter. No experience is necessary.
Anyone interested in an exciting volunteer position and helping their community at the same time can come to a meeting at 6:30 on any Wednesday evening.
Meetings are at the Fire Station at 208 East Holland Avenue.
