Good evening, today is Wednesday, March 15th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Our state representative Eddie Morales reports he met recently the Border Coalition to discuss pressing issues facing our communities.
The Coalition is a bipartisan organization of county judges and commissioners representing communities along the border.
House District 74 covers more than 700 miles of the Texas border with Mexico and Morales said it is vital to build and maintain relationships to better serve citizens.
He met with the County Judges of Maverick, Terrell, Jeff Davis and Hudspeth Counties.
Morales said they are doing a great job of ensuring that the resources and funding for border counties are addressed in their respective communities.
The Alpine Public Library is offering another program aimed at better understanding of the need to keep skies dark in our area.
“Seeing in the Dark, Watching Invisible Bird Migrations,” is the name of the program scheduled for Earth Day, April 22.
Maureen G. Frank, the new endowed professor of Conservative Biology at the Sul Ross Borderlands Research Institute, will present.
Area local governments have all adopted new Dark Skies ordinances and our area from north of Balmorhea into Mexico now is the largest Dark Sky Reserve in the world.
Much of the emphasis on dark skies is because light pollutions makes it harder for scientists at McDonald Observatory to see the heavens.
But dark skies are important to tourism, bringing in people from a wide area who can’t see the skies at night and preservation of wildlife.
Bright lights can distract migrating birds as they pass through our area.
The program will be at 7:30 p.m. April 22 and nighttime viewing at McDonald by Stephen Hummel will be at 8:30.
This month’s Alpine Animal Services Public Service Announcement is about ensuring pet cats and dogs are spayed and neutered.
Spaying or neutering can reduce or eliminate the risk of certain cancers and other diseases and save you time, money and the hassle involved in raising litters of puppies or kittens.
Spaying and neutering has an impact on the amount of dog bites. Most dog bites are caused by male dogs but pregnant or nursing female dogs are likely to bite as well.
With less abandoned litters, spaying and neutering directly impacts the number of animals that lose their lives in shelters and on the streets.
Generally most cats and dogs will hit breeding age at around five to six months old so it’s important to speak with your veterinarian about when the right time will be for your pet.
Alpine Humane Society offers assistance to the Alpine community for spay and neuter costs and will pay a portion if not all of the cost for those who cannot afford it.
Call 837-2532 to speak with them, or talk to your veterinarian to find out the best time to spay or neuter your pet.
The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve will be open Friday through Sunday with overnight camping available.
Gates open 8 Friday morning and close at 5 Sunday evening.
No reservations are required and there are no limits are on the number of attendees.
