Good evening, today is Tuesday, March 14th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services will be Wednesday for Elena Peña Gallego, a long-time resident of Alpine who died peacefully in her sleep Thursday. She was 94 and mother of former Congressman Pete Gallego.
Visitation will be at 5 at our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with a Rosary at 7. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 Thursday morning with burial to follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.
Elena was born in Fort Stockton on August 18, 1928, and left at the age of 16 to attend Sul Ross State Teachers’ College in Alpine.
Here she met Pete A. Gallego and the couple married on April 12, 1947, a marriage that lasted until Pete’s death in 2010.
Before their marriage, Elena took a position as a teacher at a rural school near Chinati Peak.
After marriage, she worked in the Gallego family restaurant then known as the Green Café while Pete continued at college.
Later, she became the first Mexican-American bookkeeper and teller at First National Bank in Alpine and later worked with the Texas Department of Human Services.
The couple became part of a core group who founded Our Lady of Peace Credit Union, which became Alpine Community Credit Union and Pete served as its president.
In 1959, Pete became the first Mexican-American elected to the Board of Trustees of the Alpine Independent School District, where he served for 15 years.
Besides Pete, Elena is survived by two other children and five grandchildren.

The Desert Sky Quilters of the Big Bend will host its 11th Annual Quilt Show at the Sunshine House from 10 to 3 Saturday.
Members of the Desert Sky Quilters will show off about 40 quilts of all sizes, some for sale and others for show.
Member Dot Maines said Saturday will be a showcase on how quilting has retained traditional styles and moved forward to more modern designs.
Maines: “It’s really fun to see what other people’s interest are and how we diverge and how we’re the same. It’s fun to know that we can offer some insights or show up and ask, ‘Oh dear what am I going to do now?’”
Desert sky quilters began in 2007 after Stitchin’ time shop closed to keep the quilting culture alive, and Member Anne Moore said the show is a great way to demonstrate their skills.
Moore: “We work on quilts all year long and we have some wonderful quilters and we have decided to show them off every year.”
Attendees also will be able to cast one vote for the best quilt of the show and purchase tickets for a raffle of a 55-by-70-inch quilt at one dollar per entry or six entries for five dollars.
The drawing will be at the end of the event and the winner must be present to receive the quilt.
There also will be a fabric vendor and a Victoria Sewing Machine Company serviceman and repairman on site to help with sewing machines. The event itself is at no charge.
The Medic Outpost’s 2023 Helping Hands Spring Funding Drive will be Wednesday through Saturday at the High Sierra Restaurant in Terlingua.
In-person or online donations will help its projects including infant mortality and newborn survival, community first responder, Afya Kid’s Health and rural healthcare prevention.
Medic Outpost is dedicated to improving medical care in remote areas that have long been ravaged by conflict, famine and inadequate infrastructure.
They center on training and equipping remote first responders from within the communities they serve to try to save lives, increase opportunities and raise healthcare standards.
