Ildefonso S. Celaya of Alpine, also known as Poncho, died Sunday at Big Bend Regional Medical Center. He was 89.
Poncho was born August 1, 1934, in San Vicente and married Berta Gallego on December 2, 1957.
After living in Marathon for 29 years and raising six daughters, they moved to their permanent home in Alpine. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Also surviving are his wife, two siblings 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services have been entrusted to Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.
A major attraction at Big Bend National Park, the Chisos Lodge, will be demolished and rebuilt and two public meetings have been scheduled to discuss the changes.
Acting Park Superintendent Chad Tinney and park staff will tell about the upcoming demolition and construction of the new Lodge and changes to public access to the Chisos Basin area.
The first will be from 6 to 7:30 March 25 at the Red Pattillo Community Center in Study Butte and the second, also from 6 to 7:30, March 28 in the B.B.T. Community Room in Alpine.
Built in 1964, the main Chisos Mountains Lodge building is an important part of the park’s history and visitor infrastructure.
Over many years, instability of the soils beneath the building has led to significant damage to the foundation, walls and building systems.
And Big Bend visitation has surpassed the kitchen and dining service capabilities of the facility. The new facility will fit the landscape, be highly energy and water efficient and serve the visitors of today and into the future.

The Nature Conservancy’s West Texas Program will host guided tours of two area preserves early next month.
The tours include the Marathon Grasslands Preserve on April 5 through 7 and a guided tour of the Davis Mountains Preserve will be April 11.
Reservations are required and they are available on the Davis Mountains and Marathon Grasslands Preserve Tour websites.

Three events have been announced for elementary school children in Alpine.
First, a brand-new Ripken STEM Center is opening at the Elementary School.
In partnership with the Permian Strategic Partnership, students in the Alpine school district will now have access to new STEM education tools and the Ripken STEM curriculum.
Kids ages 6 to 12 can join in bilingual reading and a windsock craft project at Cuentos, or reading, and Crafts at the Alpine Public Library.
The free event is from 4 to 6 next Tuesday.
And a new library reading challenge is on the horizon for grades Pre-K to 4 starting April 1.
Kids can complete the challenge by reading books about animals for a prize from the front desk.
And if enough people complete the challenge, Principal Curtis Wubbena may turn into a dragon.

Tenía 89 años. Poncho nació el 1 de agosto de 1934 en San Vicente y se casó con Berta Gallego el 2 de diciembre de 1957.
