Olive Evelyn Hill Snow passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Thursday at age 102.
She was born in Alpine on December 6, 1921, and survived the Great Depression, spending her childhood in Texas and Arkansas.
Olive graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1939 and Draughon (Drawn) Business College in 1940.
She worked in the surgeon general’s office, as the chief nurse’s secretary in Ashburn General and William Beaumont Army Hospitals and the business office at Sul Ross State University.
She also was media secretary for Region 19 Education Service Center until retiring in 1981.
She married Frank George Snow, a U.S. Army officer, on November 27, 1946, and lived in Texas, Maryland, Japan and Germany.
Olive and George were married for almost 65 years before he died in 2011.
Olive was preceded in death by her husband and a son. Surviving are two children and two grandchildren.
Burial was Tuesday at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Visitors here during Spring Break spend a lot of money but they also create an additional trash problem, Brewster County Commissioners heard Tuesday.
Brewster County Tourism Director Robert Alvarez in his regular report said highways coming into the county have had additional traffic and facilities are full but so are trash receptacles.
He said we are experiencing visitors but also a number of visiting journalists are here generating stories about our attractions to their audiences back home.
He introduced his new public relations officer Aaron Garza and said they are giving the visiting writers as much help as they can, including paying expenses.
Alvarez said a single news story about our area can be as valuable or even more so than money spent on advertising.
But visitors as well as contractors can fill dumpsters and roll-offs and many do not pay for the service.
Charging a fee could cause some to decide to dump their trash elsewhere, he said.
County Judge Greg Henington suggested some kind of task force to investigate the issue.
Commissioner Jim Westermann said the city and county have ordinances about illegal dumping but it takes manpower to enforce them.
Sul Ross State University will honor distinguished graduates and athletes at the 36 th Annual Hall of Honor celebration Saturday next week.
Nine inductees make up this year’s class, which are nominated and then chosen by the Sul Ross Alumni Association Board of Directors.
They represent the Department of Athletics and the College of Agriculture, Life and Physical Sciences.
The event at the Granada Theatre in Alpine begins with a cocktail hour at 5:30 followed by dinner and the ceremony.
Inductees include Lori Cobos, Tiki Davis, Billy Carthel posthumously, Marian Bennett, Joe Sanchez, Boosters Robert and Elidia Polanco and Ted and Liz Yadon.
Ted Yadon also is posthumous.

The City of Alpine will have its next monthly bulk pick-up for the first week of April and residents must schedule it with Texas Disposal Systems the week prior.
Pickups may be scheduled between Monday, March 25, to Friday, March 29, before noon.

Once the pick-up has been scheduled, place your bulk items on the curb or right of way directly in front of your home.
