Borderlands Research Institute has been awarded $60,000 from the San Antonio Livestock Exposition that will go toward four graduate student scholarships for the upcoming school year.
In a press release announcing the grant, BRI’s director Louis Harveson said the scholarships would allow graduate students to work directly with landowners across the region, “solving real-world challenges and preparing them for careers in agriculture and natural resource management.”
According to the institute, with the latest support, the San Antonio Livestock Exposition’s contributions to BRI now total more than $750,000 over the last 15 years.

A reminder: Alpine ISD’s summer food program will continue through the month of June.
The district is offering lunch at Alpine High School for anyone 18 and under or anyone 24 and under with a disability–and whether or not they are enrolled in Alpine ISD.
Lunch will be served from 12:00 to 12:45, Monday through Thursday all summer long.
The district says the menu will change daily and will include a variety of options, from corndogs and pizza to chicken sandwiches and fresh fruit and veggies.

Later this month, Front Street Books will host an audiobook meetup!
All you need to do is bring your headphones and your preferred device. Just find a cozy spot in the store’s reading room and listen to an audiobook. And if you have crafting projects, feel free to bring them so long as they’re relatively quiet.
The bookstore will provide coloring pages and pencils for anyone needing something to work on while listening to their audiobook. The first 10 attendees will receive a free audiobook credit for the app Libro.fm.
The audiobook meetup happens June 18 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

On Saturday, June 20, the City of Alpine celebrates the second annual Make Music Day, a celebration inviting everyone to make, share, and enjoy music together.
The day starts at the Alpine Visitor Center, where there will be a free harmonica workshop for beginners at 9:00 a.m. Then later in the day, the fun moves to Cow Dog, where there will be a percussion playtime. Throughout the rest of the day, there will be music at three different venues: At 5:00 p.m. at Alcove Social there will be a music circle, at Skelton’s Runway, Mariachi Santa Cruz performs at 3:00 p.m. and Wayne R. West closes out the night beginning at 8:00 p.m. Then at the Ritchey, Adam Bork and Peter Clementi take the stage at 7:00 p.m.
In a press release announcing the music celebration, Chris Ruggia, Alpine’s director of tourism, said the event is QUOTE “more about participation than performance” and that everyone’s invited to have fun and make music regardless of experience.

At the end of June, Frontera de Salud is coming to West Texas to provide medical services for people with limited access to health care.
Frontera de Salud, a group out of Texas Tech, will provide blood pressure and glucose screenings, school physicals, women’s health exams, ultrasounds, EKGs, and general check-ups.
Walk-ins are welcome, and the services are free.
The first clinic is Saturday, June 27 at the Fort Davis Community Center from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. The group will then head to Presidio on June 28, where they’ll be at the PCHS clinic from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Then on Monday, June 29 the group will be in Alpine at the Sunshine House from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The final clinic will be in Valentine on June 30 at 100 Bell Street, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

On Saturday, June 27, Texas Parks and Wildlife will host a presentation on living with black bears at the Jeff Davis County library.
The talk will go over the bear’s natural history, their behavior and activity in the Davis Mountains as well as how you identify and secure things near your home that might attract bears.
The presentation is free and open to the public. It starts June 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Jeff Davis County Library.

The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its annual BBQ fundraiser this summer.
The event includes an auction as well, and will be held on August 15.

Un recordatorio: el programa de alimentación de verano del distrito escolar independiente de Alpine continuará durante todo el mes de junio.
El distrito ofrece almuerzos en la escuela preparatoria de Alpine para cualquier persona de 18 años o menos, así como para personas de hasta 24 años con alguna discapacidad, independientemente de si están inscritas o no en Alpine ISD.
El almuerzo se servirá de 12:00 a 12:45, de lunes a jueves, durante todo el verano.

A finales de junio, Frontera de Salud visitará el oeste de Texas para ofrecer servicios médicos a personas con acceso limitado a la atención sanitaria.
Frontera de Salud, un grupo vinculado a Texas Tech, realizará pruebas de presión arterial y glucosa, exámenes físicos escolares, revisiones de salud para mujeres, ecografías, electrocardiogramas y chequeos generales.
Se atenderá a las personas sin necesidad de cita previa y los servicios serán gratuitos.
La primera clínica tendrá lugar el sábado 27 de junio en el Centro Comunitario de Fort Davis (Fort Davis Community Center), de 1:00 p. m. a 6:00 p. m. Posteriormente, el grupo se trasladará a Presidio el 28 de junio, donde atenderá en la clínica PCHS de 10:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m.
El lunes 29 de junio, el grupo estará en Alpine, en el centro Sunshine House, de 9:00 a. m. a 3:00 p. m. La última clínica se llevará a cabo en Valentine el 30 de junio, en el número 100 de Bell Street, de 10:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m.

El sábado 27 de junio, el Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas (Texas Parks and Wildlife) ofrecerá una presentación sobre la convivencia con osos negros en la biblioteca del condado de Jeff Davis.
La charla abordará la historia natural de estos osos, su comportamiento y actividad en las montañas Davis, así como la forma de identificar y asegurar aquellos elementos cercanos al hogar que podrían atraerlos.

El evento también incluirá una subasta y se llevará a cabo el 15 de agosto.
