Gary “Silver” Schmidt passed away last month on May 4 in Bronte, Texas. He was 89 years old.
Gary was born in Germany, near Denmark and the Baltic Sea. After enduring brutal conditions during World War II, his family relocated to Idaho in 1950.
There, Gary learned English, participated in school sports, became an Eagle Scout, and enjoyed skiing, hunting, and fishing, the latter a passion he pursued throughout his life. Enlisting in the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school, Gary worked as an electronics technician and eventually finished his Air Force career in Austin, Texas.
After retiring, Gary attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a degree in education. After teaching in Austin, Gary moved to Alpine in 1989 and taught classes at Alpine ISD until the mid-1990s.
Gary became interested in creating silver jewelry, primarily learning how to engrave silver and other metals, frequently utilizing regional gemstones in his designs. He studied the art of silver engraving with Johny Weyerts of Alpine.
Music was a part of Gary that went beyond listening: With his beautiful bass voice, he was a member of Big Bend Community Chorale in Alpine.
Gary married Alex Allard in 2021 in a small ceremony during the Covid pandemic. Alex had purchased the house across the street from Gary’s with the intent to “retire” to Alpine from Austin. Alex went to “meet the neighbors” one afternoon after house closing, met Gary, and the rest is history.
Gary is survived by his wife, Alex; a brother and sister; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Gary’s family and friends extend profound thanks to the exceptional staff of Bronte Health & Rehab Center in Bronte, Texas. Thanks to Big Bend Regional Medical Center Hospital, and the wonderful staff of the Rehab Department in particular; and gratitude to the staff at Senior Life Solutions, who provided mental and emotional support throughout this journey.
To the many individuals who visited Gary during his residence in nursing homes—friends from the running community, the St. James Episcopal Church community, and the Alpine community as well as our friends from Germany: You brightened his life!

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the Alpine City Council will hold a special meeting where they will meet in executive session to consider the “employment” of city secretary, Geoffrey “Geo” Calderon.
Council members could appoint an interim city secretary during the meeting.
Calderon has been placed on administrative leave after his arrest this past weekend. Calderon is facing multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
The special council meeting is tomorrow (TUESDAY) at 5:30 p.m. at the council chambers.

The Department of Homeland Security is waiving over two dozen federal laws to speed up construction of border barriers through Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park.
The federal government is planning to set up vehicle barriers, patrol roads and surveillance technology through the iconic public lands. The federal protections waived include the Endangered Species Act, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and the Wilderness Act.
In the last few weeks, a group of former Big Bend National Park superintendents sent a letter to the head of DHS, urging him NOT to revoke environmental and historic protections.
The group worries that waiving the protections would see the “nationally significant landscape, natural resources and cultural heritage” of the national park irreparably damaged.

The Food Pantry of Alpine will continue with this month’s food distribution this week.
Food pantry clients can select one day out of the month to receive their food distribution. Pickup dates are tomorrow (TUESDAY) from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, June 11 from 10:00 a.m. to noon; and your last chance to pick up your monthly distribution is Saturday, June 13 from 10:00 a.m to noon.

Next week, council member Rick Stephens is hosting town hall for residents of Ward 5.
The meeting comes as the city is approaching the budget cycle for the upcoming fiscal year. Stephens said he’s looking to get feedback on several topics, including priorities for the general fund, proposed capital expenditures, and the potential for the city taking on debt.
The meeting will be Monday, June 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Bread Garden Bakery, located at 801 E. Holland Ave.

This is the last month (JUNE) you can take part in the “Tire Amnesty Days” hosted by the City of Alpine and Keep Alpine Beautiful.
Until the end of the month, the free event allows residents to drop off up to four tires per household per day to the recycling center.
Get rid of your scrap tires and help reduce waste by recycling your unwanted tires.
The center is not accepting commercial tires, oversized tires, or tires with rims.
“Tire Amnesty Days” continues through this month. You can drop off your unwanted tires, Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Hal Flanders Recycling Center is located at 305 Cemetery Rd.

Gary “Silver” Schmidt falleció el pasado 4 de mayo en Bronte, Texas. Tenía 89 años.
Gary nació en Alemania, cerca de Dinamarca y del mar Báltico. Tras soportar condiciones brutales durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, su familia se trasladó a Idaho en 1950.

Mañana (martes), el Concejo Municipal de Alpine celebrará una reunión especial en la que se reunirán en sesión privada para considerar la situación laboral del secretario municipal, Geoffrey “Geo” Calderon.
Los miembros del concejo podrían nombrar a un secretario municipal interino durante la reunión.
Calderon ha sido suspendido de sus funciones (bajo licencia administrativa) tras su arresto el fin de semana pasado. Enfrenta múltiples cargos, entre ellos posesión de una sustancia controlada y resistencia al arresto.
La reunión especial del concejo tendrá lugar mañana (martes) a las 5:30 p. m. en la sala de sesiones del concejo.

El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) está eximiendo el cumplimiento de más de dos docenas de leyes federales para acelerar la construcción de barreras fronterizas a través del Parque Nacional Big Bend y el Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch.
El gobierno federal planea instalar barreras para vehículos, caminos de patrullaje y tecnología de vigilancia en estas emblemáticas tierras públicas. Entre las protecciones federales que se están omitiendo figuran la Ley de Especies en Peligro de Extinción, la Ley de Protección y Repatriación de Tumbas de Nativos Americanos y la Ley de Áreas Silvestres (Wilderness Act).
En las últimas semanas, un grupo de exsuperintendentes del Parque Nacional Big Bend envió una carta al titular del DHS instándole a NO revocar las protecciones ambientales e históricas.
Al grupo le preocupa que la eliminación de estas protecciones provoque daños irreparables al “paisaje, los recursos naturales y el patrimonio cultural de importancia nacional” del parque.

El Banco de Alimentos de Alpine (Food Pantry of Alpine) continuará esta semana con la distribución de alimentos correspondiente al mes en curso.
Los usuarios del banco de alimentos pueden elegir un día del mes para recibir su dotación de alimentos. Las fechas de recogida son: mañana (martes), de 4:00 p. m. a 6:00 p. m.; el jueves 11 de junio, de 10:00 a. m. al mediodía; y la última oportunidad para recoger la dotación mensual será el sábado 13 de junio, de 10:00 a. m. al mediodía.

La próxima semana, el concejal Rick Stephens organizará una reunión informativa para los residentes del Distrito 5.
La reunión se lleva a cabo mientras la ciudad se acerca al ciclo presupuestario para el próximo año fiscal. Stephens señaló que busca conocer las opiniones de los ciudadanos sobre varios temas, incluidas las prioridades para el fondo general, las propuestas de gastos de capital y la posibilidad de que la ciudad adquiera deuda.

Este es el último mes (junio) para participar en las jornadas de recolección especial de neumáticos (“Tire Amnesty Days”) organizadas por la Ciudad de Alpine y la organización Keep Alpine Beautiful.
Hasta finales de mes, este evento gratuito permite a los residentes llevar hasta cuatro neumáticos por hogar y día al centro de reciclaje.
Deshágase de sus neumáticos usados y contribuya a reducir los residuos reciclando aquellos que ya no necesite.
El centro no acepta neumáticos comerciales, neumáticos de gran tamaño ni neumáticos con llanta.
Las jornadas de recolección especial continúan durante todo este mes. Puede llevar sus neumáticos de miércoles a sábado, en horario de 9:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m.
