At least a partial answer to a current problem in our area was tried this week at Sul Ross State University with a Rural Health Careers Camp for high-school students.
In partnership with Permian Basin Area Health Education Center and Sul Ross, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center hosted the camp Tuesday through Thursday.
Many patients have complained of the heavy turnover of doctors and other health-care professionals and, starting with high school students, the results will take time.
When he accepted his new position at Texas Tech, Alpine Doctor Adrian Billings said it would give him a leg up on his efforts to get more providers in the area.
The goal of the only rural-focused summer health care career camp in Texas was to illustrate the need and opportunities available for rural health-care workers.
It was designed to provide information about the various disciplines in health care and training programs in West Texas.
Other higher education institutions included the University of Texas at the Permian Basin, Odessa College and Midland College.
High school students from Alpine, Terlingua, Marathon, Presidio, Sanderson, Sonora and Andrews participated.
Alpine I.S.D. posted a story about it on Facebook Friday saying it was an “awesome opportunity” for its students.
It let them explore the countless career opportunities that can improve access to health care in rural communities.
The popular award-winning Historic Alpine Ghost Tours will return next week at the entrance to the Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine.
Graveside Tales will be at 9 both Friday and Saturday next week.
Sul Ross State University Associate Professor of Communication and former Second City actor and writer Bret Scott will lead the production.
Ghost Tour Director and Chair of the Sul Ross Department of Visual and Performing Arts Marjie Scott said the tours promote the rich history of Alpine.
Guests will learn about some real people who lived and died here and there may even be some new ghost sightings this time. Get tickets at bit.ly/sulross-theatre.
Admission is twenty dollars and includes a complimentary beverage and a fresh flower to leave at a gravesite. All proceeds will benefit the Sul Ross Theatre Program.
The Alpine Police Department will have its first Community Bicycle Rodeo next week at Sul Ross State University.
It will have activities for all ages and the officers are seeking vendors to participate.
This event is a collaboration of the Texas Department of Transportation in El Paso and the Alpine Police Department. It will be at 9 on Saturday, June 15.

The next Open Weekend at the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserved with overnight camping is next Friday to Sunday. No reservations are required.
And the next guided tour of the Preserve will be on Friday, June 21.
