Good evening, today is Wednesday, June 7th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Alpine City Attorney Rod Ponton turned in his resignation at the end of the City Council meeting Tuesday.
He had been subject to frequent criticism over his bills, primarily by Councilor Chris Rodriguez who complained he was billing for work the council had not ordered.
Eaves voted no on that amended motion and it failed. But she voted for the original bill with the full amount and that one carried.
We asked Ponton if the frequent complaints were the reason for his resignation but he said it was only because he had other items that needed his attention.
After a lengthy discussion in a meeting that went almost four hours, council finally approved the annexation of a new addition to Skyway Gardens south of the city near BAM Automotive.
The council last month had another very long discussion when differences came up on a contract with the developer.
An engineer said they could not complete the paving of Lechuguilla Street, which was part of the original agreement, because of flooding issues from A Mountain west of the property.
Councilor Rick Stevens said he had met with TxDOT and the county and they came up with a solution to the flooding problem.
Then attorney Rene Ruiz, representing the developer went over two contracts, line by line, to explain wording changes they had requested.
City Manager Megan Antrim agreed with all of the suggested changes and the contracts were approved.
In other action, the council indicated it would reconsider earlier action to cancel both the Airport Advisory Board and a Transportation Committee.
Stephens said both were needed, including a Transportation Committee that never really got started because only two members were appointed and city rules said five are needed to vote.
Stephens said the Transportation Committee was created when a mobility study showed a sharp increase in truck traffic on Highway 67 when an international bridge at Presidio is built.
That bridge between Presidio and Ojinaga is again under construction with a completion in three months.
State law also requires city input before truck bypasses can be considered.
Alpine Animal Services is hosting “Adopt a Cat Month” to help with the running at large problem of increased stray animal populations in Alpine.
Half price adoptions will be all month long at $50 with microchips, shots , Feline Leukemia F.I.V. Snap test, and spaying and neutering included.
Alpine Animal Services Supervisor Jennifer Stewart said although they get calls throughout the year, they receive a sharp increase in calls during the summer season.
Stewart: “I believe it’s because the animals are maybe spending more time out during the day while people are at work, animals are being born so they’re also coming into our shelter.”
If you see a litter of small kittens, Stewart recommended leaving them alone for 12-18 hours before calling animal services since the mother is likely around to take care of them.
Stewart said in January, A.A.S. only saw 11 stray animals come through the shelter while in May 25 animals came through.
Stewart: “Those aren’t big numbers, but we’re in a small town. We don’t want to see the numbers doubling or increasing over double in the amount of intakes through our shelter.”

El mes pasado, el consejo tuvo otra discusión muy larga cuando surgieron diferencias en un contrato con el desarrollador.
Un ingeniero dijo que no pudieron completar la pavimentación de la calle Lechuguilla, que era parte del acuerdo original, debido a problemas de inundación de un monte al oeste de la propiedad.
El concejal Rick Stevens dijo que se había reunido con TxDOT y el condado y encontraron una solución al problema de las inundaciones.

Ese puente entre Presidio y Ojinaga está nuevamente en construcción con una finalización en tres meses.
La ley estatal también requiere la participación de la ciudad antes de que se puedan considerar los desvíos de camiones.
Alpine Animal Services está organizando el “Mes de la adopción de gatos” para ayudar con el gran problema del aumento de las poblaciones de animales callejeros en Alpine.
Las adopciones a mitad de precio serán todo el mes a 50 dólares con microchips, vacunas, Prueba de leucemia felina FIV Snap,y esterilización y castración incluidas.
La supervisora de Alpine Animal Services, Jennifer Stewart, dijo que aunque reciben llamadas durante todo el año, reciben un fuerte aumento de llamadas durante la temporada de verano.
Si ve una camada de gatitos pequeños, Stewart recomienda dejarlos solos durante 12 a 18 horas antes de llamar a los servicios de animales, ya que es probable que la madre esté cerca para cuidarlos.
Stewart dijo en enero que A.A.S. Solo vio 11 animales callejeros entregados al refugio, mientras que en mayo entregaron 25 animales.
