Good evening, today is Tuesday, June 7th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Dr. Jimmy Case, who retired as this Spring semester ended, will be memorialized with his name on the College of Literature, Arts and Social Sciences at Sul Ross State University.
The Texas State University System Board of Regents approved two departmental name changes for Sul Ross at their meeting in Huntsville last month.
The Department of Fine Arts will now be called the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
Dr. Case was a Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Public Administration.
He received undergraduate degrees at Amarillo College and Baylor University before going on to receive his master’s and doctoral degrees in Political Science at Texas Tech University.
He began teaching Political Science at Sul Ross in 1981 and served as the chair of the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences from 1991 to 2006.
He was promoted at that time and was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and was the interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs in 2012 and 2013.
He became executive vice president and provost in 2015.
And Dr. Andrew Alegria has been elected as the Region 6 college chair of the Texas Music Educators Association.
He joined the Sul Ross faculty in 2018 as an assistant professor of Music and is the director of Choral Activities and Vocal Study.
He received his bachelor’s degree in music from Baylor University, his master’s from the University of New Mexico and his doctorate from Louisiana State University.
The association was established in 1920 to, quote, “ensure excellence in music education for all Texas students.”
Dr. Alegria earned the La Vida Lobo Award last year for directing the music in the widely- attended campus Christmas tree lighting in Alpine.
It was the culmination of the first-ever Alpine Christmas Stroll, a project of the Alpine Historical Association.

Newly-elected Alpine Mayor Catherine Eaves has scheduled her first Meet the Mayor event from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Alpine Public Library multipurpose room.
Former City Manager Erik Zimmer began the series with a Meet the Manager program.
That was followed by a Meet the Chief for then Police Chief Robert Martin and a Meet the Mayor with Andy Ramos.
All are welcome to attend at no cost.
Frontier CASA will host a “learn about friends of CASA” event Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with lunch provided at the U.C. Building at Sul Ross.
Recruiter and Facilitator Arely Leyva said friends of CASA is a way for those who are not of age or who can’t go through the full process to join CASA to still have an impact.
Leyva: “Community members always ask us ‘well we can’t commit but we can help by volunteering’ and I mean we get a lot of people like that and it’s perfectly fine. So we didn’t want to reject them because we do need the help so we decided to do the friends of CASA.”
Usually people have to be 21 years of age to participate in Frontier CASA but now 15 to 20 year old’s can help their community.

The Alpine Sunshine House and their seniors have announced they will participate in the Kindness Rocks Project and say they want to have some fun with their neighbors.
They suggest you keep your eyes open and you may find a few of their hand-painted rocks hidden around Alpine.
The lucky finders of a rock with “Hashtag Sunshine House Alpine T.X.” on the back can keep it or re-hide it around town.
If you find such a rock, they ask you email or Facebook a message so they can share it with the community.
The rocks will be hidden throughout the area this week.

El Dr. Jimmy Case, quien se jubiló al finalizar este semestre de primavera, será recordado con su nombre en la Facultad de Literatura, Artes y Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross.
La Junta de Regentes del Sistema de la Universidad Estatal de Texas aprobó dos cambios de nombre de departamento para Sul Ross en su reunión en Huntsville el mes pasado.
El Departamento de Bellas Artes ahora se llamará Departamento de Artes Visuales y Escénicas.
El Dr. Case fue un Profesor Distinguido de Ciencias Políticas y Administración Pública.
Recibió títulos universitarios en el collegio de Amarillo y la universidad Baylor antes de recibir su maestría y doctorado en Ciencias Políticas en la universidad Texas Tech.
Comenzó a enseñar Ciencias Políticas en Sul Ross en 1981 y se desempeñó como presidente del Departamento de Ciencias Sociales y del Comportamiento de 1991 a 2006.
Fue ascendido en ese momento y fue nombrado decano de la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias y fue rector interino y vicepresidente de Asuntos Académicos en 2012 y 2013.
Se convirtió en vicepresidente ejecutivo y rector en 2015.
Y el Dr. Andrew Alegria ha sido elegido como presidente universitario de la Región 6 de la Asociación de Educadores de Música de Texas.
Se unió a la facultad de Sul Ross en 2018 como profesor asistente de Música y es el director de Actividades Corales y Estudio Vocal.
Recibió su licenciatura en música de la Universidad de Baylor, su maestría de la Universidad de Nuevo México y su doctorado de la Universidad Estatal de Luisiana.
La asociación se estableció en 1920 para, cito, “garantizar la excelencia en la educación musical para todos los estudiantes de Texas”.
El Dr. Alegría ganó el premio La Vida Lobo el año pasado por dirigir la música en el encendido del árbol de Navidad del campus de Alpine, que contó con una gran asistencia.
Fue la culminación del primer Paseo Navideño de Alpine, un proyecto de la Asociación Histórica de Alpine.

La recién elegida alcaldesa de Alpine, Catherine Eaves, ha programado su primer evento Conozca a la alcaldesa de 5 a 6 p.m. el Jueves en el salón de usos múltiples de la Biblioteca Pública de Alpine.
El exadministrador de la ciudad, Erik Zimmer, comenzó la serie con el programa conce el administrador.
A esto le siguió un encuentro con el jefe para el entonces jefe de policía Robert Martin y un encuentro con el alcalde con Andy Ramos.
Todos son bienvenidos a asistir sin costo alguno.
Frontier CASA organizará un evento de “aprender sobre los amigos de CASA” el miércoles de 11 a. m. a 3:30 p. m. con almuerzo proporcionado en el Edificio U.C. en Sul Ross.
La reclutadora y facilitadora Arely Leyva dijo que amigos de CASA es una manera para que aquellos que no son mayores de edad o que no pueden pasar por el proceso completo para unirse a CASA aún tengan un impacto.
Por lo general, las personas deben tener 21 años para participar en Frontier CASA, pero ahora los jóvenes de 15 a 20 años pueden ayudar a su comunidad.
