Officials with Fort Davis ISD have put together a resignation proposal for the district’s former superintendent Graydon Hicks. That’s according to the Big Bend Sentinel.
The paper reports that the district’s school board met earlier this week and that Hicks has received the proposal and already responded with a counter offer. The district’s current superintendent told the paper that attorneys are now working through a final agreement.
Hicks was placed on paid administrative leave in March for what the school board called a QUOTE “inability to work with the board.” Hicks has said the board asked him to do something illegal.

Sul Ross State University’s Borderlands Research Institute is set to receive $8 million in funding as earmarked in the state’s budget for the next two years.
That’s according to State Senator Cesar Blanco, whose district includes the Big Bend region. The research institute’s director Louis Harveson told the Big Bend Sentinel that the funding is a QUOTE “huge boost” for both the institute and the university as a whole.
The institute tells the paper that the funding could help them potentially double the size of their staff.

Next week, Texas A&M Agrilife is hosting a webinar on the New World Screwworm. The parasitic fly, which embeds its larvae into the living flesh of animals and humans, wreaked havoc on the agriculture industry decades ago and is once again close to the state.
The free webinar will include entomology and animal health experts from throughout the state to provide education and information during the panel on June 9, from 2 p.m. to 4:30.

On Friday, the Big Bend Gallery hosts an opening reception for its latest exhibit – “Animals, Real and Imaginary.”
The reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. at 121 W. Holland. The exhibit will be up through July 29.

The following day, on Saturday, celebrate National Trails Day with a hike to the highest point in the Davis Mountains State Park.
The ranger-led hike will take you up to the Limpia Creek Vista summit. The roughly 7.5 mile hike takes close to 4 hours. The park advises all interested hikers to bring a sack lunch and at least two to three liters of water.

Next month, the art gallery Ballroom Marfa will open a new exhibit called “Los Encuentros” – it’s a collection of work by several artists focusing on the “elevation of materials from everyday life.”
The exhibition’s artists work in combining various art styles – from painting and sculpture to installation.
The opening reception for “Los Encuentros” is July 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. Ballroom Marfa is located at 108 E. San Antonio St.

Later this summer, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold a BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.

Funcionarios del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Fort Davis (FSD) han elaborado una propuesta de renuncia para el exsuperintendente del distrito, Graydon Hicks. Esto según el Big Bend Sentinel.
El periódico informa que la junta escolar del distrito se reunió a principios de esta semana y que Hicks recibió la propuesta y ya respondió con una contraoferta. El superintendente actual del distrito declaró al periódico que los abogados están trabajando en un acuerdo final.
Hicks fue puesto en licencia administrativa con goce de sueldo en marzo por lo que la junta escolar denominó “incapacidad para colaborar con la junta”. Hicks ha declarado que la junta le pidió que hiciera algo ilegal.

El Instituto de Investigación de las Tierras Fronterizas de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross recibirá $8 millones en fondos asignados en el presupuesto estatal para los próximos dos años.
Esto según el senador estatal César Blanco, cuyo distrito incluye la región de Big Bend. El director del instituto de investigación, Louis Harveson, declaró al Big Bend Sentinel que la financiación supone un «gran impulso» tanto para el instituto como para la universidad en su conjunto.
El instituto afirma al periódico que la financiación podría ayudarles a duplicar su plantilla.

La próxima semana, Texas A&M Agrilife ofrecerá un seminario web sobre el gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo. Esta mosca parásita, que incrusta sus larvas en la carne viva de animales y humanos, causó estragos en la industria agrícola hace décadas y, una vez más, se encuentra cerca del estado.

Al día siguiente, el sábado, celebre el Día Nacional de los Senderos con una caminata al punto más alto del Parque Estatal de las Montañas Davis.
La caminata guiada por guardabosques lo llevará a la cima de Limpia Creek Vista. La caminata de aproximadamente 12 kilómetros dura casi 4 horas. El parque recomienda a todos los excursionistas interesados traer almuerzo y al menos dos o tres litros de agua.
