Good evening, today is Friday, June 30th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Fourth of July weekend celebrations already are underway all around the area until the actual day of our country’s birthday on Tuesday.
Alpine will celebrate with a community picnic at the Brewster County Courthouse Lawn at 6:30 Sunday where people can bring food to share and instruments to play together.
Alpine also will celebrate the 52nd Annual Kiwanis Fourth of July Celebration on Tuesday at Kokernot Park with the parade starting at 5 from Sul Ross and 5th Street up to Kokernot park.
Marathon has its 16th Annual Full Moon Festival Chili Cook-Off throughout the weekend to raise money for the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and the Marathon P.T.O.
Cooks will start at 9 Saturday at the Marathon Motel end at 2 with the dance starting at 7 and closing out with fireworks after dark.
The Mustang Chili Cook Off will begin at 9 Sunday with registration for cooks with a silent auction until noon. Judging and awards will be at 1.
The Big Bend Chamber of Commerce and Terlingua Fire and E.M.S. will host this year’s Fourth of July Parade Tuesday followed by a celebration with music, hot dogs and more.
Parade line-up starts at the old Study Butte store across from the Cottonwood store at 5:30 and will finish at the Emergency Services Station.
Fort Davis will continue its Coolest Fourth of July celebrations at 10 Saturday with a hometown parade and car show with events throughout the day at the courthouse stage.
Sunday will continue with events at the courthouse from 12 to 8, featuring a free Latin showcase at 7 and fireworks at 9:30.
And Fort Davis’ yearly Coolest 5-K in Texas will be Tuesday with the 1-K fun run and walk at 8:15 a.m.at the Jeff Davis County Park followed by the 5-K at 8:30.
The Alpine Humane Society reminds citizens to take care of their pets during the holiday.
July 5 reportedly is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters and animal services from pets scared by the fireworks.
If you have pets, make sure their collars and microchips are active and up to date with current contact information.
Try to create a safe space inside the home as dark and as soundproof as possible to shelter pets from the noise of fireworks.
If you do let them outside, escape-proof your yard by checking gates, fences and areas where pets may want to dig.
The Alpine Ambassadors have scheduled a ribbon cutting at 5:30 Friday, July 7, at Hippo Taxidermy at 2801-A East Highway 90 in Alpine.
Howard and April Parson have taken ownership of the shop and want to tell the world about it.
Howard Parson said they will offer the same services as before, serving the wilderness industry with taxidermy, preserving the creatures hunters have harvested.
Newly-stuffed animals will include deer, audad, elk, lion, bobcat, javelina, “basically everything,” he said.

The Texas Tourism Industry Recovery Program was established to provide one-time reimbursement grants of up to $20,000 to rebuild after the pandemic.
Businesses in the travel, tourism and hospital industries can apply. The include transportation companies, hotels and motels, entertainment facilities, sight-seeing businesses and others.
