Brewster County voted earlier today (TUESDAY) to bring the creation of an emergency services district to voters in the fall. As Carlos Morales reports, IF approved through an election, the district would collect taxes to fund emergency services in the northern half of Brewster County.
During Tuesday’s hearing, a handful of residents weighed in on the potential benefits and drawbacks of creating an emergency services district for the northern half of Brewster County.
MONTAGE1: “Having a high quality EMS service is a priority for me.” / NICK: “But I’m not in favor of the taxes that are being proposed.” / ROSE: “And this district, as proposed, would cover both EMS and fire. / ROACH: In my mind, I really prefer the ESD because I know my tax dollar is guaranteed for that purpose and that purpose only.” (0:21)
That’s Alpine’s Patty Roach, Mark Rose – who was involved with the taskforce that put together the idea of the district, Nick Simmons, and Vernon Tucker.
Brewster County Judge Greg Henington said whether or not the emergency services district is created is QUOTE “in the hands of the voters,” who will now weigh in on the matter in November.

The Museum of the Big Bend is inviting children between the ages of 4 and 10 to explore their creativity during the museum’s annual Summer Art Camp.
The camp will run from July 20 and 24 at the museum’s Cultural Events Center on the Sul Ross
State University campus.
The summer camp is designed to inspire young artists through hands-on activities and creative exploration.
Registration is $35 for members and $50 for non-members. The deadline to register is July 15.

Next week, head to Front Street Books for a talk and book signing with Jason Stone, author of the book The Beauty of Days Gone By.
The book is a modern western novel about European ranchers.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 9 with a meet and greet. Then afterwards, Alpine Historical Association board member and historian Matt Walker will lead an interview with Stone about the novel. The event will conclude with a book signing.
Stone grew up in West Texas – and The Beauty of Days Gone By is his debut novel.

Next month, the Chinati Foundation, the nonprofit arts organization in Marfa, will host two film screenings at the Crowley Theater: Maddie’s Secret by John Early and Asteroid City by Wes Anderson.
The directors of both films will give introductions to their movies before each screening. The movies are free and open to the public – seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The screening for Maddie’s Secret is Tuesday, July 7 at 7:00 p.m. and the showing of Asteroid City will be Tuesday, July 14 at 4:30 p.m.
The Crowley Theater is located at 98 S. Austin St. in Marfa.

Durante la audiencia del martes, varios residentes expresaron sus opiniones sobre las posibles ventajas e inconvenientes de crear un distrito de servicios de emergencia para la mitad norte del condado de Brewster.
“Contar con un servicio de emergencias médicas de alta calidad es una prioridad para mí”. /
“Pero no estoy a favor de los impuestos que se proponen”. /
“Y este distrito, tal como se plantea, abarcaría tanto los servicios de emergencias médicas como los de bomberos”. /
“Personalmente, prefiero el distrito de servicios de emergencia porque sé que el dinero de mis impuestos se destinará garantizadamente a ese fin, y solo a ese fin”.
Se trata de Patty Roach (de Alpine), Mark Rose —quien participó en el grupo de trabajo que desarrolló la propuesta del distrito—, Nick Simmons y Vernon Tucker.
El juez del condado de Brewster, Greg Henington, declaró que la creación del distrito de servicios de emergencia está —cito textualmente— “en manos de los votantes”, quienes decidirán sobre el asunto en noviembre.

El Museo del Big Bend invita a niños de entre 4 y 10 años a explorar su creatividad durante el campamento anual de arte de verano del museo.
