Good evening, today is Thursday, June 29, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services will be July 8 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church for Mary M. Pallanez of Alpine, who died June 8 at home after a short illness at age 85.
Rosary will be at 9:30 and Mass to follow at 10 with burial at Holy Angel Cemetery.
She worked as a caregiver at Outreach Service and was a caregiver to her family as well.
Mary is preceded in death by her brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Holy Angels Cemetery and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
The Alpine School Board Wednesday approved its 11-million-dollar budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 and teachers will get a three-thousand dollar pay raise.
Most area jurisdictions have an October 1 fiscal year but, because a school year runs from September through June, the fiscal year ends during summer recess.
Superintendent Dr. Micelle Rinehart said the tax rate of a dollar and 14-point-29 cents was discussed but it will not be up for approval until after it gets the approved values.
That will happen later in the summer.
The budget is in a slight deficit because of anemic state funding and Rinehart said they are waiting for additional state funding to bring it into balance.
She said the raises were made possible by salary offsets. They were truly needed because Alpine has the second-lowest salary range in the area.
Alpine’s Hal Flanders Recycling Center has announced new summer hours and reports it is not accepting glass at this time as a result of maintenance of the glass tumbler.
And it is not accepting tree limbs right now because the center is at full capacity.
For the summer, the center is closed every Sunday through Wednesday and open from 8 to 1 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the last load at 12:50.
The 16th Annual Marathon Full Moon Festival Chili Cook-Off and Dance is this weekend to raise money for the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and the Marathon P.T.O.
It all begins at 7 Friday with the Chili Cook-Off Kick-Off Party at the French Company Grocer with music by the Scott Walker Band.
Cook registration will begin at 9 Saturday at the Marathon Motel. Bob Freeman, Don Wickham and Ray Santos will perform during the cook-off until judging and awards at 2.
Craig Carter will perform and host the dance at 7 for people to watch for free or pay 10 dollars to dance.
Saturday will close with fireworks behind the Ritchie Building sponsored by the Gage Hotel at 9 or after dark.
The Mustang Chili Cook Off will begin at 9 Sunday with registration for cooks with a silent auction until noon. Judging and awards will be at 1.
In preparation of the revitalization of the Marathon History Museum, the Marathon Public Library is asking citizens to pick up their items in the museum.
Those who have any items currently in the museum that belong to them with value to them or their family heritage must retrieve their items by August first.
Items may be obtained by contacting library staff and pre-identifying the item by accurately describing them.
Library staff will retrieve items from the Museum in anticipation of a pickup at the library. Any items not claimed by that date will become the property of the Marathon Public Library.

El personal de la biblioteca recuperará los artículos del Museo antes de recogerlos en la biblioteca.
Cualquier artículo que no sea reclamado para esa fecha pasará a ser propiedad de la Biblioteca Pública de Marathon.
