Jesus “Chuy” Vega, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, has entered into eternal rest. He was 80.
Chuy lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to his family, and an unwavering willingness to help anyone in need. He was the ultimate “jefe” — patron and godfather who set the standard for his family not through empty words, but through his quiet, powerful actions.
From a young age, he was a familiar and trusted face in the Alpine community, working at nearly all the local service stations and managing Vega’s Chevron for several years. His career journey later took him to Big Bend Memorial Hospital, Marquez’ Texaco in Andrews, and Ward County in Grandfalls, where he worked until his retirement. Chuy was incredibly proud of his professional achievements, especially earning his water treatment certifications from Texas A&M University.
A man of deep joy and a unique sense of humor, Chuy famously lived by the motto: “Live for today and not for tomorrow!” He embraced life fully and cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.
Chuy’s legacy of love, strength, and laughter will live on through his four children; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many more.
Services for Jesus “Chuy” Vega will be Friday, July 3, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine.
Funeral services will be at Holy Angels Cemetery immediately following the mass and a luncheon will take place at Our Lady of Peace Parish Hall.
Chuy will be deeply missed, but his spirit remains with us until we meet again.

A reminder: City of Alpine offices will be closed Friday in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. The offices will return to their regular schedule Monday, July 6.

And with Independence Day approaching, don’t forget there will be plenty to do in Alpine and the surrounding Big Bend area. The day’s celebrations in Alpine start with the annual Fourth of July Parade beginning at 10:00 a.m. The route will wind through the town, starting at Kokernot Park then heading down 5th Street and ultimately ending at the courthouse.
And at the courthouse there will be a blue-ribbon cook off competition. The categories are “best baked good” and “preserved perfection.” The competitions are free to enter. The turn in time for baked goods is 11:00 a.m. with judging at 11:30 a.m. The turn in time for a preserved dish is noon with judging at 12:30 p.m.
The awards ceremony for the cook off will be at 1:00 p.m. And there will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day and the Fourth celebrations culminate with fireworks at Kokernot Park at 9:30 p.m.

All this week, the Texas Department of Transportation will be working on a stretch of U.S. 67 from Presidio to Marfa.
Drives can expect shoulder closures along with single-lane closures, which will see construction crews directing traffic. Remember to drive cautiously, and observe and obey all warning signs.
The TXDot construction takes place daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and is expected to wrap up by Thursday, July 2.

On Friday, the Marfa Studio of Arts is holding a silent art auction to benefit its program that provides art classes at Marfa Elementary.
The auction, called “Neighbors and New Friends,” will feature donated artworks from artists near and far, with all proceeds going towards funding the new year of art classes at Marfa Elementary.
The event takes place on Friday, July 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with bidding starting promptly at 5:00 p.m.

In July, head to Front Street Books for a talk and book signing with Jason Stone, author of the book The Beauty of Days Gone By.
The book is a modern western novel about European ranchers.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on July 9 with a meet and greet. Then afterwards, Alpine Historical Association board member and historian Matt Walker will lead an interview with Stone about the novel. The event will conclude with a book signing.
Stone grew up in West Texas – and The Beauty of Days Gone By is his debut novel.

Next month, the Chinati Foundation, the nonprofit arts organization in Marfa, will host two film screenings at the Crowley Theater: Maddie’s Secret by John Early and Asteroid City by Wes Anderson.
The directors of both films will give introductions to their movies before each screening. The movies are free and open to the public – seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The screening for Maddie’s Secret is Tuesday, July 7 at 7:00 p.m. and the showing of Asteroid City will be Tuesday, July 14 at 4:30 p.m.
The Crowley Theater is located at 98 S. Austin St. in Marfa.

Later this summer, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference about tackling issues, strengthening partnerships and sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

Jesús “Chuy” Vega, un amado esposo, padre, abuelo, bisabuelo, hermano y amigo, ha entrado en el descanso eterno. Tenía 80 años.
Chuy vivió una vida definida por el trabajo duro, la devoción a su familia y una disposición inquebrantable para ayudar a quien lo necesitara. Fue el “jefe” por excelencia —un protector y guía que marcó el ejemplo para su familia no con palabras vacías, sino a través de sus acciones silenciosas pero poderosas.
Desde joven, fue un rostro conocido y de confianza en la comunidad de Alpine; trabajó en casi todas las estaciones de servicio locales y administró la estación Vega’s Chevron durante varios años. Su trayectoria profesional lo llevó más tarde al Big Bend Memorial Hospital, a Marquez’ Texaco en Andrews y al condado de Ward en Grandfalls, donde trabajó hasta su jubilación. Chuy estaba sumamente orgulloso de sus logros profesionales, especialmente de haber obtenido sus certificaciones en tratamiento de aguas por parte de la Universidad Texas A&M.
