Ramon Pacheco Sanchez, born in Marfa in 1949, has passed away
Ramon lived a full life marked by passion and commitment. He dedicated over 35 years of his life to Fort Davis National Historic Site, where he became a beloved figure among his colleagues and visitors alike.
His love for the outdoors was evident in everything he did, and he took great pride in protecting the beauty of the park. Before his long and fulfilling career at the historic site, Ramon served in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971 as a member of the U.S. Army. While Ramon never married and had no children of his own, he cherished his siblings and was a constant source of love and support for them.
Those who knew Ramon will remember him as a kind-hearted man with a warm smile and a generous spirit.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his three sisters and brother.
During today’s Brewster County Commissioners Court, officials updated a resolution passed earlier this month asking for help with the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly that embeds its larvae into the flesh of wildlife and livestock.
The original resolution commissioners approved of mentioned medicines that QUOTE “haven’t been proven scientifically.”
County Judge Greg Henington:
“So when we sent it off to A&M, they kind of came back and said, “Well, we agree with you on the screwworm, but we can’t…we don’t have the research that shows, what’s the name of the drug? – Ivermectin. – Ivermectin mixed with feed is 100% effective in curing the screwworm.” So we went back and took a look at Tom Green’s resolution and sort of adopted that. We’re basically just updating the resolution that we passed last time, eliminating language about the medication.” (0:30)
While the screwworm has been eradicated from the U.S., recently the parasitic fly has been detected about 700 miles from the Texas-Mexico border.
State agriculture officials say if you think you have livestock that may have been affected, report it.
Texas Governor Greg Abott has called a special legislative session – set to begin next month. During the special session, lawmakers will tackle priority bills outlined by the governor. On the list so far is Senate Bill 3, which Abbott vetoed shortly before the deadline, saying the law would not have survived QUOTE “valid constitutional challenges.”
The bill would have banned the sale of hemp products containing THC in Texas.
Abbott has instead said the state needs QUOTE a “regulatory framework that protects public safety, aligns with federal law.”

Next month, Fourth of July celebrations are happening across the tri-county area including in Alpine.
Festivities in Alpine are set to begin with a parade the morning of Friday, July 4. The parade will go from Kokernot Field to the courthouse, where there will be games and music. Later in the day, there will also be an old-fashioned blue ribbon cook off, an Alpine Cowboys game, fireworks at night and a dance at the American Legion Hall.

Ramón Pacheco Sánchez, nacido en Marfa en 1949, ha fallecido.
Ramón vivió una vida plena, marcada por la pasión y el compromiso. Dedicó más de 35 años de su vida al Sitio Histórico Nacional de Fort Davis, donde se convirtió en una figura querida tanto entre sus colegas como entre los visitantes.
Su amor por la naturaleza era evidente en todo lo que hacía, y se enorgullecía de proteger la belleza del parque. Antes de su larga y gratificante carrera en el sitio histórico, Ramón sirvió en la Guerra de Vietnam de 1969 a 1971 como miembro del Ejército de los Estados Unidos. Si bien Ramón nunca se casó ni tuvo hijos, apreciaba mucho a sus hermanos y fue una fuente constante de amor y apoyo para ellos.
Quienes conocieron a Ramón lo recordarán como un hombre bondadoso, de sonrisa cálida y espíritu generoso.
Quienes lo recordaron con cariño son sus tres hermanas y su hermano.
Durante la sesión de hoy (MARTES) del Tribunal de Comisionados del Condado de Brewster, los funcionarios actualizaron una resolución aprobada a principios de este mes (JUNIO) solicitando ayuda contra el gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo, una mosca parásita que incrusta sus larvas en la carne de la fauna silvestre y el ganado.
La resolución original, en la que los comisionados aprobaron los medicamentos mencionados, CITA “no han sido probados científicamente”.
Juez del Condado Greg Henington:
Menciono que cuando las envian a A&M, les respondieron diciendo que estaban de acuerdo con el sobre el gusano barrenador, pero no tienen la investigación que demuestre Ivermectina. – La ivermectina mezclada con el alimento es 100% efectiva para curar el gusano barrenador'”. Así que revisaron la resolución de Tom Green y, en cierta medida, la adoptaron. Básicamente, estan actualizando la resolución que aprobaron la última vez, eliminando la información sobre el medicamento.
Si bien el gusano barrenador ha sido erradicado de EE. UU., recientemente se ha detectado la presencia de esta mosca parásita a unos 1125 kilómetros de la frontera entre Texas y México.
Las autoridades agrícolas estatales recomiendan que, si cree tener ganado afectado, repórtarlo.
El gobernador de Texas, Greg Abott, ha convocado una sesión legislativa especial, que comenzará el próximo mes. Durante la sesión especial, los legisladores abordarán proyectos de ley prioritarios señalados por el gobernador. Hasta el momento, en la lista se encuentra el Proyecto de Ley Senatorial 3, que Abbott vetó poco antes de la fecha límite, argumentando que la ley no habría superado “impugnaciones constitucionales válidas”.
El proyecto de ley habría prohibido la venta de productos de cáñamo con THC en Texas.
En cambio, Abbott ha afirmado que el estado necesita un “marco regulatorio que proteja la seguridad pública y se ajuste a la ley federal”.
