Good evening, today is Friday, June 24th and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
We reported at this time yesterday that the Alpine Ghost Tours, a creation of the new Alpine Historical Society, had won the statewide Texas Travel Award.
Alpine won two statewide awards, five small market awards and Big Bend National Park won the People’s Choice Award.
The Best Hiking and Biking Trail Statewide went to Hancock Hill near Sul Ross State University.
Winning the statewide Best Podcast Award was Heart of the Big Bend and ArtWalk took the Art Fest or Event award for a small market.
The Small Market Award for museums went to the Museum of the Big Bend and Viva Big Bend won the Music Festival Event for a small market.
Kokernot Field baseball park won the small market award for a Sports Venue and, as we reported, A.H.A.’s Ghost Tour won the Under the Radar award.
Tourism Coordinator Heather Yadon said the Visit Alpine team submitted the winning entries and was what she called “thrilled” to win so many of them.
She said the real credit goes to event organizers like Kerri Blackman for Artwalk, Stewart Ramser from Viva Big Bend and Mary Bones and her team at the Museum of the Big Bend.

CBS-7 this week quotes the Department of Justice to report Hector Flores Junior of Fort Stockton was convicted Wednesday of Child Endangerment in a jury trial in Pecos.
Flores and his daughter Luna were reported missing from the Hot Springs area in Big Bend National Park in February.
A few days later, Mexican authorities found the pair across the Rio Grande in Mexico and conducted a welfare check.
It was learned that Flores and Luna did not have proper documentation to remain in Mexico and they were arrested.
Luna was then deported back to the United States and turned over to the Park Service so she could be referred to Child Protective Services and Flores was charged.
Luna told authorities they had run out of food and had not eaten in four days.
A sentencing date for Flores was not set.
Sul Ross State University unveiled a new bookstore website in collaboration with Akademos simplifying the textbook process for students and faculty members.
The website is a software platform that is part of the Online Bookstore service designed to streamline the process of adopting textbooks and course materials.
Professors will be able to choose required textbooks and materials depending on their classes and update the system.
Students then will have a list of their required textbooks displayed automatically according to their course schedule to make it easier to find book options.
Students also will be able to buy school supplies, guides, materials, electronics and non-educational books through the website’s marketplace.

The Texas DPS will increase the number of Texas Highway Patrol Troopers on the road through July 10 as part of a program against drunk driving.
The goal is to reduce the number of D.W.I.-related crashes, injuries and fatalities.
D.P.S. offers some safety tips for people driving during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday:
First, don’t drink and drive. Move Over or Slow Down for police, fire, E.M.S., TxDOT vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights on.
Show the same courtesy to fellow drivers who are stopped on the side of the road.
Buckle up everyone in the vehicle and slow down, especially in bad weather, heavy traffic, unfamiliar areas or construction zones.
Eliminate distractions while driving and drive defensively, as holiday travel can present additional challenges.
Drive safely and make it home or wherever you want to go.

El departamento de seguridad publica de Texas aumentará el número de patrulleros de carreteras de Texas en las carreteras hasta el 10 de julio como parte de un programa contra la conducción en estado de ebriedad.
