The grand opening of the new Emmett and Miriam McCoy Building at the Museum of the Big Bend on the Sul Ross campus is scheduled this weekend.
This addition doubles the size of the Museum, creating large, dynamic spaces for events and the display of art and history.
Award-winning architectural firm Page used the unique nature of the site to create a melding of the original 1937 museum with a new contemporary structure.
Art works by several prominent artists will be on display, including Western Beef Cattle, a series of rarely exhibited paintings by the late El Paso artist Tom Lea.
Others include the John L. Nau III Collection of Texas Art, Murals by Clint Baermann, Xavier (hah-vee-AIR) Gonzalez and Julius Woeltz.
Activities include the Grand Opening Reception Friday evening and free tours, presentations and book signings Saturday.

The Big Bend Sentinel this week reports that officials are celebrating a partial reopening of Presidio International Bridge.
The highway bridge was being widened from two lanes to four and construction has gone through a number of starts and stops.
Officials from the City of Presidio, Customs and Border Protection and the Caminos y Puentes Federales, or federal roads and bridges, took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week.
It marked the opening of a newly-constructed lane on the Mexico-bound side of the bridge, an important milestone in the long-delayed project.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales and the House Appropriations Committee have voted to advance the Homeland Security Appropriations bill to the House for a vote.
The new bill would secure much-needed funding to support Uvalde County’s efforts to modernize its Emergency Operations Center facility.
The district Gonzales represents also would benefit from increased funding for the Border Patrol, including nearly 1,800 new agents.
Other items include mental health clinicians, workforce care and suicide prevention and funding to Homeland Security Investigations for disrupting human and narcotics smuggling.
Items Gonzales provided include increased funding for Operation Stonegarden and an additional 6.3 million dollars towards fentanyl detection improvements.
Gonzales said the package confirms a strong commitment to fortifying national security interests and protecting our communities from threats.
Fort Davis is gearing up for its Coolest Fourth of July weekend with events Friday June 30 through Sunday July 2 with the yearly 5-K fun run Tuesday July 4.
Friday’s celebrations will begin at 4 with entertainment, games, food and merchants at the courthouse.
At 7, Doug Moreland and friends will have their Barn Dance at the Kelly Pavilion with entry at 20 dollars at the door.
Saturday will kick off at 10 with a hometown parade and car show with events throughout the day at the courthouse stage.
Tumbleweed Smith’s One-Man Show at the Visitor Center will be at 2 and at 3, the parade winner will be announced at the courthouse stage.
There will be historic jail tours from 3 to 5 and Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys will close off the night with music at the Kelly Pavilion at 8.
