Good evening, today is Thursday, June 22nd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A major contributor to the Museum of the Big Bend and its new Emmett and Miriam McCoy addition that will formally open this weekend, died last week.
Miriam McCoy, matriarch of her family and a Texas philanthropist, passed away on June 14 at age 98.
She was born on December 17, 1924, on Long Island, New York, and met her future husband when she was 14 years old and he was 16.
Emmett created a new roofing company that grew to become McCoy’s Building Supply, which continues into its 96thyear.
The Emmett and Miriam McCoy Foundation was created for philanthropic works and contributed to numerous causes including the Museum of the Big Bend.
Miriam is survived by a daughter, two sons, nine grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
A private family service is planned at historic Blanco Chapel on the McCoy Ranch near Kyle.
Memorials in Miriam’s memory may be made to McCoy Scholars Endowment, Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center, Grand Companions Humane Society or a charity of choice.
The Sul Ross Small Business Development Center reported Thursday that businesses in the hospitality industry still can apply for grants to recover from Covid losses.
The Texas Tourism Industry Recovery Program was established to provide one-time reimbursement grants of up to 20 thousand dollars to rebuild after the pandemic.
The one-time grants are to reimburse eligible costs to qualifying businesses.
Businesses in the travel, tourism and hospital industries can apply. They include transportation companies, hotels and motels, entertainment facilities, sight-seeing businesses and others.

Our former Congressman Will Hurd is joining a growing cast of characters seeking the Republican nomination for President.
Hurd was the only Black Republican in the House during his tenure in Congress from 2015 to 2021.
He told C.B.S. News it was a decision that he and his wife decided on because we live in complicated times and need common sense.
He listed China, inflation, education and artificial intelligence as key issues.
Hurd complained about how elected officials are telling us to hate our neighbors, who are our neighbors, not our enemies.
Stories about Fourth of July activities in the area are dribbling into our newsroom as a full slate of events is expected if this is a normal Independence Day.
Alpine will celebrate the weekend next week with two events, one on Sunday July 2 and one on the actual Fourth of July day.
The Alpine Historical Association will host a community picnic at the Brewster County Courthouse Lawn at 6:30 p.m. Sunday July 2.
Citizens should pack a picnic or bring something to share. There’ll be a Pickin’ Circle for musicians to bring their own instruments and jam out.

Alpine will celebrate the 52nd Annual Kiwanis 4th of July Celebration on Tuesday July 4th at Kokernot Park.
The daytime event will run from 12 to 2:30 p.m. with Barbeque at the American Legion and the parade line up at 4:15 at Sul Ross and 5th Street.
The parade will begin at 5 with booths opening at the same time at Kokernot Park followed by a car show at 5:30.
Music will start at 7 with the community band. At 8:15 Big Canyon TV’s hot dog eating contest will begin.
The last scheduled event will be the Mystic Gitanis Belly Dancers. Music by Russ Money will close out the night with fireworks at dark.
