Good evening, today is Wednesday, June 22nd and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The city of Alpine has hired a building official after being without one for nearly a year.
David Hale last served in that job from December, 2019, to July 30 last year.
The City Council Tuesday night unanimously agreed to hire Andrew Devaney of Baytown and he said by Zoom that one of his first goals is to improve the city’s business community.
His current assignment includes a department of economic development and several speakers Tuesday in a budget workshop expressed a need for a more vibrant business community.
Devaney said he is, in his words, “eager and willing” to get involved.
Acting City Manager Megan Antrim said Devaney has all the needed certifications.
Since Hale left, Permit Technician Jessica Boorse and Compliance Officer Adelina Beall have been carrying the load.
And Fort Stockton Building Office Roy Mendoza would provide help on a part-time basis.
Devaney said he still needs to give his two-weeks’ notice to the city of Baytown and then will move to Alpine.
The council also unanimously approved former Justice of the Peace Gilbert Valenzuela as the new municipal court judge.
And Antrim said a map of all street paving jobs past and present are being displayed on the city website at cityofalpine.com.
The Alpine Kiwanis Club has announced that Remington Carrillo will be Grand Marshal for this year’s Fourth of July parade.
Remington is the five-year-old daughter of Patrick and Letty Carrillo. When she was just two, she was diagnosed with Pre B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Her treatment at Children’s Hospital in San Antonio lasted until just last October when Remi rang the victory bell signaling the end of her treatment.
Her parents said the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office were extremely understanding of the time off they needed.
The parade starts at 5 p.m. Monday, July 4, by Porter’s Thriftway and moves north to Kokernot Park for an evening of typical Independence Day events including fireworks at sundown.
Details of our celebration and the “Coolest Fourth” at Fort Davis will be repeated several times before the Big Day arrives.
Viva Big Bend has won the 2022 Texas Travel Awards Best Music Festival for a Small Market a month before the 11th annual event.
Viva Big Bend was chosen because of the number of live performances and showcases across the communities of the Tri-County area.
The article praised how statewide acts share stages with local favorites, fostering new connections and making a rich musical potpourri for the venue- and town-hopping visitor.
This year’s festival will July 27 to 31 and continue the trend of featuring more than 50 bands in more than 10 venues in Alpine, Marfa, Marathon, Terlingua and Fort Davis.

The author of books like Black and White, Uvalde Raider and Out There, will be at Alpine Wine at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30.
Black and White is about the Texas Highway Patrol, Uvalde Raider is about a World War Two-era B-17 Bomber at Uvalde and Out there is about the lower Big Bend area.
An eighth-generation Texan, English was raised mostly in the Big Bend area and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Terlingua.

La ciudad de Alpine ha contratado a un funcionario de construcción después de estar sin uno durante casi un año.
