Good evening, today is Tuesday, June 20th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
It’s already hot with the mercury hovering around the century mark all week but it technically still has been spring.
The summer solstice is the official start of summer and it will occur at 9:58 Wednesday morning.
The seasons all are tracked to the position of the sun in the sky, or really the position of the earth, which results in where the sun appears to be from our vantage point.
Unlike many explanations, the earth does not “wobble” on its axis.
It is just slightly tilted from exactly straight up as it orbits the sun, putting the north closest to the sun in our summer and the sun closest to the south in our winter.
The summer solstice marks its furthest north location, making it theoretically the hottest day and officially the longest period of daylight.
The Big Bend Regional Hospital District recently discussed a new clinic for Presidio but part of the grant that is funding that project also will apply to a new one for South Brewster County.
Hospital District Director J.D. Newsom said Monday’s meeting at the Terlingua Community Center had a great turnout with many great questions.
He said a clinic in the Terlingua area starting early next year has been funded and it only is a question of working out details.
Earlier discussions were about property just west of the Red Pattillo Center in Study Butte but Newsom said discussions also have been about a mobile clinic to cover the wide area.
Newsom said the grant is large enough to fund clinics both in Presidio and Terlingua-Study Butte and it will happen.
County Commissioners Sarah Colando, who lives on Terlingua Ranch, said residents are enthusiastic about the prospect of a clinic in the area.
She said the property next to the Pattillo Center still is available if needed.
Fort Davis Independent School District will host a gymnastics clinic for all children ages 6 through 12 in the Dirk-Anderson Elementary School gym July 10 through 15.
The Archives of the Big Bend, located at the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library on the Alpine campus of Sul Ross State University, has been awarded the Preservica Starter Plus Grant.
Preservica is a leading provider of digital preservation software. It is designed to safeguard and provide permanent access to long-term digital information.
Head of Archives Victoria Contreras said the grant allows her to digitally preserve and provide access to centuries of West Texas and borderland history, culture and research.
The program supports underfunded archives across all sectors in initiating their Digital Preservation projects.
As a grant recipient, the archives will receive a fully-funded Starter Plus account providing 250 gigabytes of storage.
Contreras said the grant marks a major milestone in enhancing access to the Archives of the Big Bend and ensuring the long-term safety and preservation of its digital holdings.

The Big Bend Chamber of Commerce is selling raffle tickets from 9 to 12 Saturday at the Cottonwood or from the Stables in Study Butte.
The Chamber is raising money for the Terlingua Fire and EMS through a Fourth of July parade after-party raffle.
Awards include gift certificates for La Kiva, Long Draw Pizza and DB’s Rustic Iron, or a half- day river trip, jeep tour and more.
