Good evening, today is Monday, June 20th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Members of the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club will participate in the national amateur radio Field Day exercise at North Double Diamond Clubhouse next weekend.
The clubhouse is eight miles south of Alpine just over Big Hill at 46590 U.S. Highway 118.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day.
This event, from 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday, is open to the public and all are welcome.
Field Day is a showcase for how amateur radio works reliably under any conditions from almost any location to create an independent communications network.
Spokesman Bob Inderbitzen said Ham radio can interface with laptops or smartphones and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes.
He said it remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics, physics, meteorology and numerous other scientific disciplines.
It is a huge asset to any community during disasters or emergencies if the standard communication infrastructure goes down, he said.
Anyone may become one of more than 750 thousand licensed hams in the U.S.

Registration is now open for the 2022 West Texas Rural Philanthropy Days July 20 to 22at Sul Ross State University.
Grant funding from private and public sources to local nonprofits can be instrumental to the health and well-being of rural communities.
But to be successful at grant seeking, nonprofits need to build relationships with funders and understand the grants process.
These are particular challenges when both funders and nonprofit education centers are so far away.
The event is designed, organized, funded, and planned by community leaders from West Texas.
It will provide rural nonprofits with access to funding sources and opportunities for collaboration.
Space is limited and seats are quickly filling up so early registration is encouraged.

A Brewster County Deputy conducted a traffic stop south of Marathon Thursday night and arrested the driver, Zouh Zaway.
Two illegal migrants were spotted trying to hide from the deputy inside the vehicle.
Zaway was charged with two counts of smuggling of persons and the Illegal Immigrants were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
Now playing is summer season opener for The Theatre of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University.
“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” runs weekend through July 24 at the University’s Kokernot Outdoor Theatre with all performances beginning at 8 p.m. .
Based on the comic strip by Charles Schulz, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” follows the beloved Peanuts gang as they navigate the joys and challenges of childhood.
Sul Ross Chair of Visual and Performing Arts Marjie Scott said with this show, the Theatre of the Big Bend is transitioning into a professional summer theatre company.
She said the goal is to produce consistent, high-quality theatre in the Big Bend and to make shows that people from all over the country will come and see.”
Tickets are 20 dollars for adults and 15 for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older.
