The second annual Make Music Day kicks off tomorrow (SATURDAY) in Alpine, bringing together people from across the Big Bend to make, share, and enjoy music together.
Chris Ruggia is the city of Alpine’s tourism director.
He told KVLF earlier this week that the celebration is an international holiday that got its start in France in the 1980s.
RUGGIA1: “It’s kind of a mixture of things where somebody who has never touched a music instrumental before can show up and make some noise, something where people who are interested in playing can come and contribute, people who have played a long time can share their music and then just performances by musicians who are out and about playing – so it’s kind of that range, that whole range.” (0:24)
The day starts at the Farmer’s Market, where there will be a free harmonica workshop for beginners at 9:00 a.m.
Then later in the morning at 10:00, there will be a craft event where you can make your own bagpipes out of rubber gloves and straws. Then at noon, the group Trash Pandas will
Throughout the rest of the day, there will be music at three different venues: At Skelton’s Runway, Mariachi Santa Cruz performs at 3:00 p.m.; then at 5:00 p.m. at Alcove Social there will be a music circle; and Wayne R. West closes out the night beginning at 8:00 p.m. Then at the Ritchey, Adam Bork and Peter Clementi take the stage at 7:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Alpine City Council will hold a special meeting, where they’re set to head into executive session to QUOTE “hear a complaint and make inquiry into conduct of a council member in regards to conduct with city personnel.”
The special meeting will be Tuesday, June 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the council chambers.

Next week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host a slate of training sessions for business owners to improve their work and discover new ways to approach business.
The first online course will be Wednesday, June 24 and will teach you everything you need to craft a winning capability statement. You can think of capability statements as your business’ resume – it’s a one-page document outlining your business’s competencies when you’re seeking government contracting. During this one-hour webinar, you’ll learn five key areas to craft a comprehensive statement.
This webinar is June 24 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.
Then on Thursday, learn how to construct your very own website. That training will go from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on June 25.
On Friday, the last course for the week will tell you about the key missteps to avoid when growing your business. This one-hour training is Friday June 26 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

This is the last month (JUNE) you can take part in the “Tire Amnesty Days” hosted by the City of Alpine and Keep Alpine Beautiful.
Until the end of the month, the free event allows residents to drop off up to four tires per household per day to the recycling center.
Get rid of your scrap tires and help reduce waste by recycling your unwanted tires.
The center is not accepting commercial tires, oversized tires, or tires with rims.
“Tire Amnesty Days” continues through this month. You can drop off your unwanted tires, Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Hal Flanders Recycling Center is located at 305 Cemetery Rd.

Next month (JULY), the Coolest 5K and 1K run will be held at the Jeff Davis County Park on Highway 17 South in Fort Davis.
The event benefits the Fort Davis Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships and classroom support to Fort Davis ISD students and teachers.
The run is part of the Fourth of July celebrations in Fort Davis, and will be on Friday, July 3.

Next month, head to Front Street Books for a talk and book signing with Jason Stone, author of the book The Beauty of Days Gone By.
The book is a modern western novel about European ranchers.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on July 9 with a meet and greet. Then afterwards, Alpine Historical Association board member and historian Matt Walker will lead an interview with Stone about the novel. The event will conclude with a book signing.
Stone grew up in West Texas – and The Beauty of Days Gone By is his debut novel.

Mañana (sábado) comienza en Alpine la segunda edición anual del *Make Music Day* (Día de Hacer Música), reuniendo a personas de toda la región de Big Bend para crear, compartir y disfrutar de la música en conjunto.

A principios de esta semana, comentó a la emisora KVLF que esta celebración es un evento internacional que surgió en Francia en la década de 1980.

El martes, el Concejo Municipal de Alpine celebrará una reunión especial en la que pasará a sesión privada para —cito textualmente— “escuchar una queja e investigar la conducta de un miembro del concejo en relación con su trato hacia el personal municipal”.

La próxima semana, el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas (SBDC, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross ofrecerá una serie de sesiones de capacitación para que los propietarios de negocios mejoren su labor y descubran nuevas formas de gestionar sus empresas.
El primer curso en línea se impartirá el miércoles 24 de junio y le enseñará todo lo necesario para elaborar una declaración de capacidades eficaz. Puede considerar estas declaraciones como el currículum de su empresa: se trata de un documento de una sola página que resume las competencias de su negocio al buscar contratos gubernamentales. Durante este seminario web de una hora, conocerá cinco aspectos clave para redactar una declaración completa.
Este seminario web tendrá lugar el 24 de junio, de 1:00 p. m. a 2:30 p. m.
Posteriormente, el jueves, aprenderá a crear su propio sitio web. Dicha capacitación se llevará a cabo el 25 de junio, de 2:00 p. m. a 3:00 p. m.
El viernes, el último curso de la semana abordará los errores más comunes que debe evitar al hacer crecer su negocio. Esta sesión de una hora se impartirá el viernes 26 de junio, de 10:00 a. m. a 11:00 a. m.

Este es el último mes (junio) para participar en las jornadas de recolección especial de neumáticos (“Tire Amnesty Days”) organizadas por la Ciudad de Alpine y la organización Keep Alpine Beautiful.
Hasta finales de mes, este evento gratuito permite a los residentes llevar hasta cuatro neumáticos por hogar y día al centro de reciclaje.
Deshágase de sus neumáticos usados y contribuya a reducir los residuos reciclando aquellos que ya no necesite.
El centro no acepta neumáticos comerciales, neumáticos de gran tamaño ni neumáticos con rines.
Las jornadas de recolección especial de neumáticos continúan durante todo el mes. Puede llevar sus neumáticos usados de miércoles a sábado, en horario de 9:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m.

El próximo mes (julio) se celebrará la carrera “Coolest 5K and 1K” en el parque del condado de Jeff Davis (Jeff Davis County Park), ubicado en la autopista 17 Sur en Fort Davis.
El evento recauda fondos a beneficio de la Fort Davis Education Foundation, una organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece becas y apoyo en el aula a estudiantes y maestros del distrito escolar independiente (ISD) de Fort Davis.
