Eulalia Muñiz, a cherished matriarch, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and unforgettable friend, passed away peacefully yesterday (on June 17) in Alpine, Texas, at the age of 102.
Born in Terlingua, Eulalia’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and unwavering strength.
Eulalia, affectionately known as “Lala” or “Grandma Lala”, dedicated herself to her family and community throughout her life. Family and friends will remember her for her playful spirit and sense of humor. She had a knack for telling jokes and telling it like it was—brutally honest yet always delivered with love. Her passion for life extended to the activities she enjoyed: from bingo and singing to the thrill of horror movies, dancing, and celebrating Halloween.
Lala leaves behind a legacy of love through her four children
In her passing, Lala is reunited with her beloved husband, two sons, and several brothers and sisters.
Services for Lala will take place at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine next week on Tuesday, June 24 with visitation beginning at 8:00 a.m. The prayer service will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the funeral mass will follow at 10:00. Burial will take place after the Mass at Holy Angels Cemetery in Alpine.

The Alpine City Council last night discussed several changes to the job description for the city manager position to open it up to a wider pool of potential candidates.
In part, the council wants to amend the job description to say that certain skills, education levels and experience are preferred and not a required minimum.
Mayor Catherine Eaves brought the item up for discussion:
EAVES1: “I feel like looking at this, when we say that a minimum is required and that seven years of experience is required, we are really limiting ourselves. // And I feel like we’re shooting ourselves in the foot if we require that.” (0:16)
The proposed changes to the job description will be brought up for approval at the next council meeting.
During Tuesday’s meeting, council members also voted unanimously to provide a monthly $2,500 stipend to Geo Calderon, the city secretary, while he serves in the role as interim city manager.

The City of Alpine will be closed tomorrow in observance of Juneteenth.
Offices will resume regular hours on Friday, June 20 at 8:00 a.m.
During the closure, utility payments may be made at the payment drop box located outside of our office or online by registering at cityofalpine.com.
The Brewster County Courthouse will be closed Friday in observance of the holiday. Regular working hours there will resume on Monday, June 23.

This week, the Sul Ross Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents the musical “Next to Normal.”
The show tells the story of a suburban mother who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder brought on by a past family trauma. Her family struggles to cope with her condition and their own mental health.
The musical opens Friday, June 20 starting at 7:30 p.m. with following performances are Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors and children. Admission is free for veterans.

Space tourism company Blue Origin has announced its next crewed flight.
The company says its next New Shepard flight will launch from its facility near Van Horn on Saturday, June 21.
The launch window for the flight opens at 8:30 Saturday morning.

Community members are hosting a Centennial School reunion in Alpine the first week of July.
Centennial School, like Blackwell in Marfa, was one of the many de facto segregated schools across the Southwest where Hispanic children were taught.
The three-day reunion starts Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at the school, located at 500 West Avenue H. Registration for the event will also take place at that time.
Other events include a parade down Holland Avenue, a nighttime dance at the civic center, and a night of tejano music.

Eulalia Muñiz, una querida matriarca, madre amorosa, abuela, bisabuela y amiga inolvidable, falleció pacíficamente ayer en Alpine, Texas, a la edad de 102 años.
Nacida en Terlingua, la vida de Eulalia fue un tapiz tejido de amor, risas y una fuerza inquebrantable.
Eulalia, conocida cariñosamente como “Lala” o “Abuela Lala”, se dedicó a su familia y comunidad durante toda su vida. Su familia y amigos la recordarán por su espíritu juguetón y su sentido del humor. Tenía un don para contar chistes y contarlos como eran: brutalmente honestos, pero siempre con amor. Su pasión por la vida se extendía a las actividades que disfrutaba: desde el bingo y cantar hasta con emoción las películas de terror, bailar y celebrar Halloween.
Lala deja un legado de amor a través de sus cuatro hijos.
A su fallecimiento, Lala se reencuentra con su amado esposo, sus dos hijos y varios hermanos. El servicio fúnebre de Lala se llevará a cabo en la Iglesia Católica de Nuestra Señora de la Paz en Alpine la próxima semana, el martes 24 de junio. El velatorio comenzará a las 8:00 a. m. El servicio de oración comenzará a las 9:30 a. m. y la misa funeral se celebrará a las 10:00 p. m. Después de la misa, el entierro se realizará en el Cementerio de los Santos Ángeles en Alpine.

El Ayuntamiento de Alpine debatió anoche varios cambios en la descripción del puesto de administrador municipal para ampliar la gama de candidatos potenciales.
En parte, el ayuntamiento quiere modificar la descripción del puesto para indicar que se prefieren ciertas habilidades, niveles de educación y experiencia, y no un mínimo requerido.
La alcaldesa Catherine Eaves planteó el tema:
CITO: “Al analizar esto, cuando decimos que se requiere un mínimo y siete años de experiencia, nos estamos limitando. // Y siento que nos estamos perjudicando si lo exigimos”.
Los cambios propuestos a la descripción del puesto se presentarán para su aprobación en la próxima reunión del consejo.
Durante la reunión del martes, los miembros del consejo también votaron por unanimidad proporcionar un estipendio mensual de $2,500 a Geo Calderón, secretario municipal, mientras se desempeñe como administrador municipal interino.
La ciudad de Alpine permanecerá cerrada mañana por la celebración del 19 de junio. Las oficinas reanudarán su horario habitual el viernes 20 de junio a las 8:00 a. m.
