Roberto Lujan, of Alpine, has died. He was 69 years old.
As a child he attended the segregated Centennial School and after graduating from Alpine High School, Roberto volunteered to join the United States Army.
After receiving an honorable discharge, Roberto returned to Alpine and attended Sul Ross State University, where he graduated with a degree in fine arts. He spent the following ten years as a social worker, assisting people applying for basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. And then, in the early 90s, Roberto moved to Presidio, where he began his teaching career.
In 1994 Roberto met his wife, Julia West, and they remained best friends for thirty years. Roberto was grounded to the earth, and he was most proud of the organic pomegranate orchard that he and Julia nurtured. Together they harvested and hand pressed hundreds of quarts of pure organic juice to sell at the local farmers’ markets. Roberto was most joyful when he shared this rare and exotic gift of bounty with his community.
His appreciation of the land extended to serving as a board member with the Big Bend Conservation Alliance. Roberto’s curiosity about his ancestry led him to the discovery that he is a descendant of the Lipan Apache of La Junta and he eventually played a major role in the rescue and restoration of the ancestral Lipan cemetery in Presidio.
Roberto – husband, brother, uncle, friend, educator, farmer, activist – may you rest in peace.
Donations may be made in his honor to the Big Bend Conservation Alliance.

U.S. Reps. Veronica Escobar and Joaquin Castro, who represent the El Paso and San Antonio areas respectively, said their names were on a list of targets written by the man charged with killing the Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and shooting two others on Saturday.
According to the Texas Tribune, Vance Boelter had a list of 45 elected officials — all Democrats — on his list of targets.
In a statement, Escobar said politically motivated violence and violence of any kind has no place in democracy and that QUOTE “we all have a role to play in moving our country toward healing.”

The Brewster County Groundwater Conservation District holds its regular meeting this week.
Among other items on the agenda is a discussion, and potential action, on monitoring equipment that was recently ordered and where to install it.
The conservation district, which manages groundwater resources in the county, meets on Thursday, June 19.

The Brewster County phone system is changing. The main phone line for the county is changing to 432-837-6200.
Each department can now be reached by dialing this main number and selecting the extension of the office you’re trying to reach. Direct numbers to individual offices will no longer work. You can find a complete list of each department’s extension online at brewstercounty.gov.

Next month, head to Marathon for a Fourth of July celebration at Post Park.
The celebration starts at noon and will feature a kids fishing tournament and a BBQ lunch – with proceeds benefiting the Marathon PTO. There will also be live music from 1 p.m. to midnight, food trucks staring at 5 p.m. and games like volleyball and horseshoes.
The celebration takes place Saturday, July 5 – admission is free.

Roberto Luján, de Alpine, falleció a los 69 años.
De niño, asistió a la escuela segregada Centennial y, tras graduarse de la preparatoria Alpine, se ofreció como voluntario para unirse al Ejército de los Estados Unidos.
Tras recibir una baja honorable, Roberto regresó a Alpine y asistió a la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross, donde se graduó en Bellas Artes. Pasó los siguientes diez años como trabajador social, ayudando a personas a cubrir necesidades básicas como comida, ropa y alojamiento. A principios de los 90, Roberto se mudó a Presidio, donde comenzó su carrera docente.
En 1994, Roberto conoció a su esposa, Julia West, y fueron mejores amigos durante treinta años. Roberto tenía los pies en la tierra y estaba muy orgulloso del huerto de granadas orgánicas que él y Julia cultivaban. Juntos cosechaban y prensaban a mano cientos de litros de jugo orgánico puro para vender en los mercados agrícolas locales. Roberto se sentía muy feliz al compartir este raro y exótico regalo de la abundancia con su comunidad.
Su aprecio por la tierra lo llevó a ser miembro de la junta directiva de la Alianza para la Conservación de Big Bend. La curiosidad de Roberto por su ascendencia lo llevó a descubrir que es descendiente de los apaches lipán de La Junta y, con el tiempo, desempeñó un papel fundamental en el rescate y la restauración del cementerio ancestral lipán de Presidio.
Roberto —esposo, hermano, tío, amigo, educador, agricultor, activista—, que en paz descanse.
