Good evening, today is Friday, June 17th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Democrat John Lira who seeks to unseat first-term Republican Tony Gonzales for Texas Congressional District 23 came by the radio station Friday to introduce himself to the region.
Lira said that although he’s running as a Democrat, he knows the diversity in voices throughout the district means he’ll have to work with opinions that don’t fall neatly within party lines.
Lira: “This is a very diverse place. Communities are very old, they have their own unique history, their own unique personality their own unique landmarks. You’ve got to respect that and offer an honest handshake whether red or blue, left or right. It’s more to me about who’s up and who’s down.”
Currently one large issue is gun reform and Lira says things like background checks, red flag laws and banning certain assault weapons have bipartisan support.
Lira: “So there’s a lot of agreement there but again we’re going up against large, well-financed organizations and sources and entities that will do all they can to prevent those changes from happening.”
Lira said that with immigration problems in our area, citizens can have concerns about protecting themselves and their property, but these gun reforms aren’t about limiting what Texans value.
Lira “This isn’t about taking guns whatsoever, it’s about keeping guns out of the wrong hands and I think any American, any Second Amendment lover would appreciate that.”
Lira also said that the 38 billion dollars in funds from the new infrastructure bill will be available in Texas, which can increase economic development in the area.
In his opinion, investments in the aerospace industry, aviation, construction and renewable resources can be industries that can instill smart growth in our area.
The Big Bend Conservation Alliance is using money from a recent fundraiser to help residents replace non-compliant outdoor lighting fixtures.
Laura Gold, director of the West Texas Friends of the Night Sky, told the Alpine Dark Sky Working Group Thursday that homeowners should pitch in soon before the money runs out.
She said A.E.P. is working now on design but once it starts replacing non-compliant lighting, it will start moving quickly.
Those who have put off changing their lighting now may find the limited pot of money may have run out before they decide to act.
Light pollution interferes with scientists studying the heavens at the observatory. Proper lighting is better for the environment and is more economical to boot.
It also boosts tourism with people from larger cities coming out to be able to see the night sky and its wonders like the Milky Way.

The Alpine Public Library will host a free Mental Health Symposium by Mind Education Specialist Adam Lopez from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the library.
Lopez will kick off a series of gatherings to help anyone from troubled youth to veterans get help through local means.
Lopez: “It’s not going to be behind pharmaceuticals. We don’t want to wait for Big Government. What we want to do as locals, as moms and dads and citizens of our community, stand up and have a voice and this is that opportunity.”
Lopez wants to connect with the community and bring resources to help those in need and encourages those who want to help as well to come to this event.
Lopez: “If you’re an educator or an ex-teacher or a local who wants to make a difference, or you have a story that you can tell about how you overcame a difficulty or burden in your life, that’s who we want to be involved.”

El Big Bend Sentinel informa esta semana que tanto la Junta Escolar de Marfa como el Ayuntamiento de Marfa discutieron la seguridad escolar en sus respectivas reuniones esta semana.
El demócrata John Lira, que busca desbancar al republicano Tony Gonzales en el Distrito 23 del Congreso de Texas, pasó por la estación hoy para presentarse a la región.
Lira dijo que aunque se postula como demócrata, sabe que la diversidad de voces en todo el distrito significa que tendrá que trabajar con opiniones que no se ajustan claramente a las líneas del partido.
Actualmente, un tema importante es la reforma de armas y Lira dice que cosas como la verificación de antecedentes, las leyes de bandera roja y la prohibición de ciertas armas de asalto tienen apoyo bipartidista.
Lira dijo que con los problemas de inmigración en nuestra área, los ciudadanos pueden tener preocupaciones sobre cómo protegerse a sí mismos y a sus propiedades, pero estas reformas de armas no tienen como objetivo limitar lo que valoran los tejanos.
Lira también dijo que los 38 mil millones de dólares en fondos del nuevo proyecto de ley de infraestructura estarán disponibles en Texas, lo que puede aumentar el desarrollo económico en el área.
En su opinión, las inversiones en la industria aeroespacial, la aviación, la construcción y la energía renovable pueden ser industrias que inculquen un crecimiento inteligente en nuestra área.

López iniciará una serie de reuniones para ayudar a cualquier persona, desde jóvenes con problemas hasta veteranos, a obtener ayuda a través de medios locales.
López quiere conectarse con la comunidad y brindar recursos para ayudar a los necesitados y alienta a aquellos que también quieren ayudar a asistir a este evento.
